Saturday—a portrait by me, Adia Buford :) Featuring my grandmother, Ms. Lula Duke 🤎 The impetus behind my work is a deep desire to illuminate the beauty found in everyday moments—those we often overlook or take for granted. In doing so, I become more aware and appreciative of the present moment. I feel especially compelled to highlight the everyday experiences of members of the Black community. Throughout American history, mainstream media has offered false or incomplete portrayals of who we truly are. We’ve often been portrayed as spectacles or servants—whether as slaves, entertainers, housekeepers, or the loyal best friend. Comic relief. The list goes on. These portrayals have largely been monolithic, lacking emotional depth and nuance, and failing to reflect the richness of our lived experiences. By capturing my community as we move through the “mundane” moments of life, I hope we can begin to see ourselves for who we truly are—beyond the false narratives the world has imposed on us. We are multifaceted. Our everyday realities are worthy of being seen, acknowledged, and celebrated. We are not limited to a single narrative that predicates our worth on our service to those who benefit from our pigeonholing. My desire is to travel aound the country (& world) to highlight our beauty in all its forms, starting right here in St. Louis 🤎 #photography #blackculture by @adialachelle
a few years ago i went on a journey to find the true heart of Kinloch, Missouri—the state’s first Black city. i did so by interviewing my grandmother, Ms. Lula Duke, who lived there for the first 22 years of her life. it broke my heart to see her discover that the areas that once held staples of her childhood had been replaced by mounds and mounds of illegally discarded waste i think about Kinloch often. i think of the government’s failure of this once-thriving Black community. i think of the ways we continue to see Black communities sabotaged. i wonder how we put an end to it. what i do know is that i refuse to allow Kinloch’s true heart to be erased. the journey continues 🤎 a link to the full documentary is in my bio 🏡 #kinloch by @adialachelle

went to a coffee shop to do some work. took these otw to the work ☕️ currently working to shrink the distance between ideation & execution. recently that distance has been a result of OVERTHINKINGGGGGGGG :) so, to work on that, i’m carrying my camera w me as often as i can, taking as many photos as i can, and sharing as much as i can the more i act, the less room i give myself to overthink the more i act, the more i realize it doesn’t always have to be that deep lol p.s. that coffee was gone in like .2 seconds #coffee #creativity #stlphotographer by @adialachelle
