Forty minutes at Angkor Wat, in under twenty seconds.

The stone naga was filmed at the end of October, at 5:50 AM. The north pond at 6:30 AM, well after sunrise, with the whole temple still sitting in the water.

Discover after sunrise. That’s all the advice this one needs.

4:45 AM pickup. Worth it when the sky turns pink over Angkor Wat.

How far ahead should you book a private guide for Angkor?

A month. In November, December and January that's the minimum. The rest of the year you can book closer and still be fine.

It's the question I get most weeks, and the reason isn't the one people expect. Booking late doesn't get you a lesser guide, every one of ours is licensed and vetted by us. What you lose is the match. A month out I can put you with the right person for your day. Two days out, you get whoever's free that morning.

Sunrise has a floor I can't move. Nothing under 24 hours. Pickup is 4:45 in the morning and the guide is set the night before.

Want a guide in French? Three months.

The gates open at 5:00 AM every day of the year. The sun does not.

October: around 5:55.
December: 6:10 and later.
January: about 6:30, the latest of the year.
February: back toward 6:20.

So the wait between an open gate and first light runs about 55 minutes in October, and about 90 in January.

First light comes a little over twenty minutes before the sun. Around 5:32 in October. 6:07 in January. That stretch, dark going to light, is the part worth the alarm. The sun coming up is only how it ends.

We collect at 4:45 AM as a base, then move it once we know your month and where you are staying.

The equinox sunrise is 21 to 23 September, when the sun comes up over the central tower. About 5:53 those mornings. Come if crowds don't bother you. Pick another morning if what you wanted was quiet.

$1,200 on a flight, and still not a private tour?

Nobody hesitates over the flight. Everybody hesitates over the guide.

Some days at Angkor do not need a guide. Go to Ta Prohm alone in the afternoon, walk slowly, nobody talking to you. You will still take something home from it.

A full circuit day is different. Seven or eight hours in real heat, and a lot of stone that tells you nothing on its own.

At Preah Khan, people walk straight past the two-storey library, because it stands thirty metres off the main path. At Angkor Wat, they walk past the apsara who smiles with her teeth. She is the only one in the temple who does.

Our guides are Cambodian, from Siem Reap. Some of them have more than ten years with us. Ask one of them about a single carving and you get the whole wall. Then you get the country outside the temple gates, the way it is this year.

The stones cannot tell you what Cambodia is. The person next to you can.

A private guided day starts under $100 per person. That covers your guide, your own driver and vehicle, hotel pickup, lunch and drinks. The Angkor Pass is the only thing you buy yourself.

Cycling Angkor in this heat? The bikes do the hard part.

Pedal-assist, so the climbing is not your problem. You ride the shaded forest paths between the temples, on tracks the cars cannot follow. Riders from 8 to 74 have done it.

And the last run home: bike or Jeep. Which would you pick?

Everyone asks if cycling Angkor is too hard or too hot. The park is flat, the trails are shaded, and pedal-assist does the climbing for you. 35 km, temple to temple, on paths the buses never see. Riders from 8 to 74 have done it.

The complete 2026 guide is on the blog. Link in bio.

Siem Reap, the unhurried version. 🛺
A temple. A jeep. The long way home. You set the rhythm, we set the table.

Where do I stand for sunrise at Angkor Wat?"

Not the northern reflecting pool. On a peak morning 3,000 to 5,000 people press in there.

Stand outside the main temple, before the moat. The towers go from silhouette to gold over about twenty minutes, and you watch it with maybe a dozen people around you.

Before you go:

• Gates open 5:00 AM, every day, all year
• Sunrise 5:36 AM in June, 6:30 AM in January. Be there 45 minutes before
• Headlamp and water. The paths are black and nothing is open that early
• A light long sleeve. Dry-season mornings sit at 22 to 24 degrees
• Buy your pass online at Angkor Enterprise. Soft copy on your phone, nothing to lose at the gate
• Shoulders and knees properly covered for the upper level. A scarf over a tank top gets turned away

Then do not leave. Most tripods pack up by 7 AM and the bas-reliefs empty out. That is the hour I would keep.

I grew up in the pagoda inside Angkor Wat's walls, and our private sunrise tours still run in that order: pickup at your hotel, then breakfast once the crowd has gone.

Save this for your Cambodia week.
