🎬 Starting off the week with a throwback to Viet Film Fest Encore! ❤️🌊 Thank you to everyone who joined us for the screening of Netflix's In Waves during VFF Encore! It was wonderful to bring this moving story to the big screen and share the experience with our community. 🎥✨ A special thank you to director Phương Mai Nguyễn and author AJ Dungo for joining us for a post-screening Q&A and sharing their insights into bringing In Waves from page to screen. 🎤👏 ✨ We were also excited to spotlight Bel Canto Books, a WOC-owned independent bookstore in Long Beach, CA, who joined us at the screening with the exclusive opportunity to purchase AJ Dungo’s graphic novel that inspired the film! 📚❤️ We’re grateful to the filmmakers, guests, community partners, and everyone who continues to support Vietnamese and Vietnamese diasporic storytelling. Until next time! ❤️ 🎨 Filmmaker Tags: @agedungs @silex_films bacasable #VietFilmFest #VFF2026 #InWaves #VFFEncore #VietnameseCinema Animation by @agedungs

🌊 A spotlight on the visual storytelling in AJ Dungo’s In Waves. AJ's beautiful undulating linework flows through the graphic novel as ocean waves, clothing, clouds, and hospital bedsheets. 📖 In Waves by AJ Dungo explores the beauty and complexity of his relationship with his partner as they face her prolonged battle with cancer. With a passion for surfing at the forefront of this narrative, Dungo intertwines his own story with those of the great heroes of surf in a rare work of non-fiction that is as moving as it is fascinating. Available now. #FlyingEyeBooks #InWaves #AJDungo by @agedungs

The director of IN WAVES wasn’t a surfer. She’d never lived in California. She bought the book by accident. 🌊📖 Phuong Mai Nguyen discovered AJ Dungo’s graphic memoir at Angoulême, France’s famed comics festival, after it won a prize — and bought it as a curious reader. Halfway through, she realized it was his true story: “There’s something very intimate about his book, but at the same time very universal.” She didn’t think she was capable of adapting it. She did anyway. From the IN WAVES conversation at Netflix’s Tudum Theater — full story on Dorkaholics.com. IN WAVES — in select theaters Nov 27, on Netflix Dec 11. She baptized him into surfing at Huntington Beach. Years later, he bathed her as he ushered her out of this life. 🌊 AJ Dungo revealed at the IN WAVES conversation that the film’s Seattle and Portland road trip was built from his actual home videos — reference footage he handed to director Phuong Mai Nguyen. His verdict on what she did with them: “She did such a good job making my memories even more vivid.” From the Netflix Tudum Theater screening, Oct 19. Full story on Dorkaholics.com. “Pathetic and creepy” — his words, not ours. 😅🌊 Watching your own love story on a theater screen is surreal enough. AJ Dungo told the Tudum Theater crowd that some IN WAVES moments bring Kristen back to life in a very real way — and others were “extremely embarrassing to relive, and humiliating.” From our seat at the IN WAVES screening + conversation with Dungo and director Phuong Mai Nguyen. “How was the screening?” I never know what to answer. It’s always hard to judge how people would perceive your own film. And for sure I am the worst person to comment on it. Last image is a collab with @agedungs #inwaves #filmdirector #screening #prometheus by @agedungs
