The 5 MOST USEFUL Citadel Contrast Paints 🎨

I've tested all 61 Contrast paints, and these are the five that I think are genuinely worth having in your collection.

These aren't necessarily my favourite colours or even the best Contrast paints overall. These are the ones I think you'll actually keep coming back to.

From subtle shading and icy effects, to making yellow considerably less painful, quick leather and the seemingly endless supply of skulls in the Warhammer universe, these five all have something genuinely useful to offer.

What Contrast paint do you find yourself reaching for the most?

Making a DIY Drybrush Palette! 🎨

You don't need to spend a fortune on hobby equipment! Using an old piece of plastic and a handful of spare bits from my bits box, I've put together my own homemade drybrush palette.

A drybrush palette is a really handy tool, especially if you're just getting started with drybrushing. It gives you somewhere to practise your technique and, more importantly, test how much paint is left on your brush before you take it anywhere near your miniatures.

The different textures and details let you see exactly how the paint is catching the raised surfaces, helping you avoid accidentally dumping far too much paint onto a model you've spent hours working on!

And the best part? This one cost me absolutely nothing to make!

I'll also be putting together a full tutorial on **how I drybrush my miniatures** very soon, so keep an eye out for that!

Do you use a drybrush palette, or do you just wing it? Let me know in the comments!

🌀 Gaahleri VOORTEX Mixer: Is It Worth It?

If you've ever spent what feels like half your life shaking a stubborn pot of paint, you'll know just how frustrating it can be!

After trying everything from shaking paints by hand to strapping them to a reciprocating saw (yes, really), I finally decided to buy myself a Gaahleri VOORTEX Mixer.

I've been using it regularly for the past few weeks, and I've been pleasantly surprised by just how useful it's turned out to be.

Three speed settings, hands-free mixing, and it even managed to tackle one of my most troublesome paints, Ultramarines Blue!

For someone testing as many paints as I do, being able to leave one mixing while I get on with something else is a really handy feature.

🎨 I purchased this mixer myself, and since buying it, I've become a Gaahleri affiliate.

Today We Are Spraying: Gaahleri Kaleido ColorWorks Gun Metal Metallic.

First up in our @gaahleri_official metallic airbrush paint tests is Gun Metal Metallic.

This one gives us a relatively muted, silvery-grey colour with a subtle metallic shine. It's not an overly glossy or reflective finish, leaning more towards a satin appearance, but it still catches the light nicely across Stanley's armour.

We're testing Gaahleri's Kaleido ColorWorks 12 Metallic Colors Set A, which contains 12 different metallic paints, along with an Acrylic Medium Thinner and Airbrush Cleaner included in the box.

For consistency, I'll be using the same testing process across all 12 metallic colours.

Testing details:

• Primer: Kaleido Gloss Black Acrylic Primer, recommended by Gaahleri to help bring out the metallic finish.

• Airbrush: Gaahleri Seeker Advanced.

• Air pressure: 25 PSI.

• Thinner: A couple of drops of Kaleido Acrylic Medium Thinner, included in the metallic paint set, added to each batch of paint.

• Application: Two coats of metallic paint on both Stanley and the test spoon.

The idea is to give each colour the same treatment, allowing us to compare how they look on a detailed miniature and a smooth surface.

Gaahleri kindly provided the metallic paint set, primer and additional accessories for testing.

If you'd like to pick up this metallic set or anything else from Gaahleri, including their airbrushes, you'll find a link to their website through the Linktree in my bio.

What do you think of Gun Metal Metallic? by @agraxanonymous

Ashen Grey is up next in the Army Painter Speedpaint 2.0 tests.

Despite the name, this one has a surprisingly blue-purple tone to it. Over Wraithbone, it gives a softer finish, but over the black and white drybrush, it really comes into its own with a lovely stone-like appearance.

Barry and Garry are looking rather statuesque. by @agraxanonymous

Today we're testing Darkwood from The Army Painter Speedpaint 2.0 range on Barry and Garry.

This is a really deep, rich brown with some lovely natural contrast. It flows nicely into the recesses and leaves the raised details lighter, although there is a little coffee staining in places.

Overall, a really useful brown and one I'm quite impressed with.

Well, this video has done a lot better than I expected.

After testing all 61 Citadel Contrast paints, I decided to put together my own starter set of just 10 paints. Basically, which ones would I buy first if I was starting again?

It's been great seeing so many people watching, and hopefully it's useful for anyone getting into miniature painting or looking to expand their collection.

Thanks to everyone who's watched, commented or subscribed so far.

Today we're testing Forest Sprite from The Army Painter's Speedpaint 2.0 range.

This yellowish-green Speedpaint produces a fantastic, vibrant green with excellent contrast over both Wraithbone and a slapchop drybrush undercoat.

It's slightly darker than Ghillie Dew, but shares many of the same excellent qualities.

Over Wraithbone, we get a bright, almost nuclear green with a beautifully smooth finish that isn't overly cartoonish.

Over drybrush, the colour is slightly darker and more natural-looking, with the underlying highlights and shadows coming through brilliantly.

Another really impressive Speedpaint that I'd happily recommend for painting Warhammer 40K, Age of Sigmar and other tabletop miniatures.

Today we're testing Brazen Copper from The Army Painter's Speedpaint 2.0 range!

After nine minutes in the paint mixer and a good stir, this metallic Speedpaint actually applies better than some of the previous copper and bronze colours we've tested.

Unfortunately, the dried results are still disappointing.

Over Wraithbone, the finish is quite patchy, with metallic copper collecting in the recesses while some raised areas are left looking pink rather than metallic.

Over a slapchop drybrush undercoat, the results are slightly better, but still not particularly convincing.

Having now tested the copper and bronze metallics in the Speedpaint 2.0 range, I'm struggling to recommend any of them.

For Warhammer 40K, Age of Sigmar and miniature painting in general, I think I'd stick with traditional metallic acrylics for this sort of finish.

Today we're testing Runic Grey from The Army Painter's Speedpaint 2.0 range!

Despite being described as a bluish grey, this is an incredibly thin, watery Speedpaint that behaves almost more like a wash.

Over Wraithbone, it produces a pale, stormy grey-blue with surprisingly strong contrast in the recesses.

Over a slapchop drybrush undercoat, the result is quite different, creating a much flatter blue appearance with less of the underlying contrast coming through than I'd hoped.

It's an interesting colour for painting Warhammer 40K, Age of Sigmar and other tabletop miniatures, particularly if you're looking for a cold, weathered grey-blue finish.

Today we're testing Dusk Red from The Army Painter's Speedpaint 2.0 range!

This pale purplish-red Speedpaint looks quite dark during application, but dries to a much lighter, smoother pinkish-red finish with some really nice tonal variation.

Over Wraithbone, we get a smooth, consistent colour with good contrast between the raised areas and darker recesses.

Over a slapchop drybrush undercoat, the underlying highlights and shadows help create a slightly different finish, while maintaining that distinctive muted red.

It's an interesting option for painting Warhammer 40K, Age of Sigmar and other tabletop miniatures, especially if you're looking for something a little different from the usual bright reds.
