Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program - Session #1 “Leading Together”

Organized by Morgan Wesley, Assoc. AIA of @tatehilljacobs Tate Hill and Jonathan Ruiz, AIA of @rosstarrant_architects at Marksbury Family Branch Library, “Leading Together” brought architects, designers, and industry partners together for a day of interactive learning, collaboration, and conversation. From exploring trust and team dynamics with retired Special Agent Bret Hood to examining personal growth and leadership with clinical psychologist Dr. Shannon Sauer-Zavala, participants gained valuable insights into communication, adaptability, and building stronger professional relationships.

A vendor panel offered practical perspectives on improving material selection, detailing, and construction administration, while a discussion featuring the FoodChain Neighborhood Green Grocery project highlighted the power of shared vision, community engagement, and collaboration in creating meaningful change.

The day concluded with a tour of FoodChain’s aquaponics operation, community kitchen, and Green Grocery—a powerful reminder that the best outcomes happen when people work together toward a common purpose! Thank you to the Session #1 sponsors, @clayingels | @soprema_usa | @altiersap

👏 We love seeing our members getting involved and giving back to their local K-12 communities and the connections made from participating in the Kentucky School Counselor’s Association Conference last month! One of the counselor attendees invited us to participate in their Pulaski County Career Day.

Below is from Brittany Ray, Assoc. AIA, who volunteered for the school’s request:
I had the pleasure of participating in Pulaski Elementary School’s Career Day last Friday through AIA Kentucky, where I introduced third-grade students to architecture. We started by talking about what architects do and looking at some of the “tools of the trade.” I also shared my portfolio so the students could see how architecture brings together art, math, creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. After that, the students were given a design challenge: create their client’s dream treehouse. They were incredibly creative and excited to develop their own ideas and share their designs with their classmates and with me.

One of my favorite parts was seeing how differently each student approached the same problem. Some were most interested in figuring out how to get in and out of the treehouse, while others focused more on the space itself and what could happen inside. Each student valued different aspects of the design, which made every solution unique. It was a great reminder that there is rarely one right way to solve a problem and that different perspectives are part of what makes design so interesting. That is something that can sometimes get lost in the professional world when deadlines, schedules, and project requirements take priority.

I’m very thankful to Pulaski Elementary School and AIA Kentucky for the opportunity to spend time with these students and give them a glimpse into the world of architecture. It was a fun and rewarding experience, and I hope they left feeling a little more excited about the possibilities of design.

AIA Kentucky Young Architect Representative, Jessica Farmer, AIA, participated in “Tools Day” at Jacob Elementary School in Louisville. The 1st Graders were learning about different career paths and the “tools” people use in their work.

Introducing young children to architecture helps them see the world differently—to explore how buildings are designed, how communities take shape, and how creative ideas can improve the places where we live, learn, and work. Early exposure can spark curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, and a lifelong interest in the built environment.

When we introduce children to architecture today, we help inspire the architects and community leaders of tomorrow. #Architecture #FutureArchitects #STEM #Design by @aiakentucky
