I am very pleased to have two works included in the group show, Dream Systems, bringing together a group of 17 artists whose work resonates with the writing of J.G. Ballard.

Ballard’s writing was something I looked at and had in dialogue with my paintings all throughout the MA year so it’s interesting to follow up and marker this time by being part of this exhibition.

______

Artists:
Jon Alibone | Fay Ballard | Tom Banks | Marc Beattie | Jo Berry | Christopher Campbell | Geraint Evans | Lewis Graham | Tess Gray | Andy Harper | Dan Hays | Lucia Jones | Bianca MacCall | James Moore | Jillian Murphy | Aidan Myers | Casper White

Painting becomes a way of thinking about how the Ballardian continues to capture our contemporary condition.

Works in the show explore surrealism, collapsing systems, technological isolation, and landscapes as a metaphor for the mind. Depictions of empty abandoned spaces, ghosts of modernist architecture, entropy, cars, traffic, dream imagery, embraced psychoses and environmental crisis. Ambiguous beauty presented in love, sex, violence and death.

Paintings that show the cult of content creators, celebrity culture, memories of the space age, environmental catastrophe and modern life presented on screens in our information-overloaded existence.

Mermaid Quay Planter Murals

It’s been a great few weekends chasing the sun to paint three new artworks on the planter in Mermaid Quay with @fineartphil
The paintings accompany the large main wall mural painted in the spring and accent each of the curves of the new planter.

Really blown away by the huge and quite unexpected amount of positivity coming from conversations I’ve had over the past 3 weekends whilst working on site. I say unexpected as I didn’t genuinely expect such a volume of responses to the paintings.

Artwork is usually shown in a gallery for me and often only appealing to a specific gallery-going audience, so it’s quite amazing to have chatted to many people, locals, tourists and from all walks of life about the impact of these paintings.

It showed me that these conversations do really matter beyond the gallery walls too, and the works can have similar feelings or be seen as an extension of a studio artist’s practice.

These connections to diverse public audiences is only seemingly possible whilst we’ve been physically there working outside so I’m glad we worked during the busy weekends.
Engaging the public is precisely the point and providing art for a much wider audience does really open up conversation about landscape subject matters, feeling, positivity, hope.

The joyful intrigue from kids with their parents is always going to sit with me too, hopefully it’ll inspire kids to paint also. Thanks for all the generosity lovely people of Cardiff.

Fantastic project with @studio_response, can’t wait for the next one.

Mermaid Quay Cardiff Bay Mural

Very exciting to share some photographs of the Mermaid Quay mural project from Spring 2026.

Incredibly fun project to be part of and for the work to extend from my research interests in nature, flora into a painting in the public realm, proud of what we achieved. It’s great to add some colour to the skyline in Cardiff Bay too.

A massive undertaking at 11 metres high and 27 metres wide on the new build carpark; it was a challenge to scale up a painting from the tiny preparatory painting to extend onto the walls.

Thank you to the legendary @fineartphil for putting in all the hard work in assisting me in painting this and to the super duo team of Emma and Jo at @studio_response for all their energy in making the project happen.

Scroll through to see a few process shots and pictures from above as well as a few close ups from the ground floor.
We will share some more images after the next phase is complete soon.

‘To Understand The Wild You Must First Understand The Wood’ – oil on jute, 150 x 100cm, 2026
____

Title inspired by ‘The Wild Places’ book by Robert Macfarlane who has been a keystone reference and author throughout my MA year. This line really sums up the distances between wild and tame nature, the shifting baseline of what is considered natural or artificial.
It’s a narrative about how we must locate ourselves within local nature to understand the wider realm of nature and particularly how nature has been adapted to fit within our idealised views of landscape.

Possibly my favourite work from the MA show, if I’m allowed to choose, for the blue, the jarring colours, gritty surfaces and the freedom of mark I got with this one.

Great to see one of the paintings I made a few years ago featured on Wales’ Home of the year on the BBC. Really grateful to my collectors for cherishing this one and giving it pride of place in the house; it’s one of my favourite paintings from the ‘Props’ series from 2023, particularly for the heavy impasto painterly surfaces and it certainly brought together my love for abstraction together with subject.

See some other details of it close up and in the old warehouse studio and during the creation alongside a few other paintings I made during that time.

Intersections With Autumn Light

Oil on canvas, 150 x 150cm, 2026

This one was part of my MA show last month and leans into that new direction and discovery of collage to initiate the images; collaging brings together different subjects and viewpoints from my journeys and experiences of nature; collaging is essential to disrupt the linear view of a single landscape and to thread meaning through multiple places. The painting responds to nature writing including my favourite Robert Macfarlane texts and a RB Kitaj painting.

Scroll through to see a few details of the textures and play I had with the image during the painting process.

‘Flame Into Being’ (L)
‘Scaffold’ (R)

Two works I paired during the MA show, painted simultaneously during the MA year, and brought into conversation with each other for the show; in a sense ‘Scaffold’ is leaning towards the inner, interior, contained and controlled, creation of landscape, whilst ‘Flame Into Being’ is reaching towards a more otherworldly space, somewhere external, distant, dreamlike.

It took a long time to realise how important both of these works are during the process of working on larger paintings, and how the smaller works can hold as much weight perhaps as something of scale.

‘Mutable’
Oil on canvas, 150 x 150cm, 2026
_____

One of the first works where I started disrupting the image more obviously and leaning into collaged reference images as a way to break away from linear landscapes. In this painting I taped out three sections to play with perspective and to fragment together different landscapes. Lots of thinking about art historical references, such as RB Kitaj and Caspar David Friedrich too in terms of colour and square format, again to disrupt a traditional view of landscape.

I’ve included a few images from the process along the way and some close ups. this was also part of the MA Interim show at City & Guilds Art School early in March 2026

This project was a big one.
In every way. 10 metres tall by 27 metres wide.

Getting to work with @aidan_myers and seeing his process and design come to life each day was incredible.

@studio_response have been phenomenal throughout. Making sure we were looked after on site, and providing us with everything we needed from start to finish

There is one small part of this project left… by @aidan_myers

Join the opening on Thursday 4th June, 6 - 8pm at the Glassyard ACME studios in Stockwell SW9

Exciting to be showing a new painting alongside my fellow MA Fine Artists from City & Guilds here in London.
It’ll be good to show outside of school with something new I made during my course.

Big thanks to @jskurnik for organising by @aidan_myers
