Uzbekistan was the biggest surprise of my travels this year 🇺🇿

I spent two weeks following the Silk Road, something I first learned about in middle school and never imagined I’d really get to see one day. Walking through bazaars and markets that have been trading goods for over 1,000 years felt so surreal to me.

The cities are unlike anywhere else I’ve been. Many mosques are covered in the most beautiful blue and turquoise tiles I can’t stop thinking about. Every mosaic is so intricate that I kept stopping to wonder how anyone built these buildings centuries ago.

And the food was 🤌 Plov and lagman were my favorites and I ate them every chance I got.

Central Asia deserves way more attention than it gets. I’m already plotting my return to give the rest of the region the time it deserves.

My brain honestly just played the entire Moana soundtrack this entire trip 🐢🌊 by @alayna_abroad

Swimming with these guys was a daily occurrence in Maui. Just walked down from the condo, jumped in the water and voila at least 6 turtles within swimming distance 🏝️ Plus thousands of other sea creatures just going about life. Amazing.

Let me just dump this right here 🌺🌈🌊

Great week here’s what went down

🏝️ survived Hurricane Lala and an 18 hour power outage thanks to a pack of Kona and portable chargers
🏝️ Hawaii poke and acai bowls are godly and undefeated don’t @ me
🏝️ swam with more turtles than I could count
🏝️ rode ATVs through the rainforest and felt very unstoppable until the rain started making me hydroplane down the muddy hill
🏝️ rescued a gecko from the hot sand I still think about the poor little guy and his burned feet
🏝️ witnessed sunsets that felt personally unfair to every other beach I’ve been to
🏝️ chased waterfalls cause I was gonna have it my way or nothing at all
🏝️ put my new Osmo Pocket 4 through its paces and I am obsessed
🏝️ hiked across lava flows and gave myself some gnarly blisters
🏝️ sunset boat ride with the fam
🏝️ did half of the Road to Hana in a red open top jeep, hair everywhere
🏝️ saw a family’s stuff get almost entirely swept away by huge waves (they were all away) so i tried to save it from getting ruined but then the mom walks up behind me pissed (pina colada in hand) that I’m touching their stuff. Even though half of it was soaked, spread across the beach and burried in the sand lol by @alayna_abroad

There’s an estimated 2-3 million cats living in Greece and it’s my mission to pet them all 🐈🐈‍⬛ by @alayna_abroad

Spending my savings on designer bags and clothes 🙅🏻‍♀️❌

Spending my savings on exploring archeological sites and “haunted” underground crypts by myself in obscure places 🙋🏻‍♀️✅

I’ve been to 28 Greek islands so you don’t have to take my ratings personally…. Or I mean do, I still stand by what I said. by @alayna_abroad

Japan was a HUGE one checked off the bucket list ✔️✍️

Wanna guess where my next once in a life time trip is gonna be in September? 👀 by @alayna_abroad

I lived the dream at so many animal cafes in Japan but the Loutre @uuu_chaaan otter cafe in Osaka was my unexpected highlight 🦦🩵

These little guys were so friendly and curious and CUTE (obvs) and so social. They reminded me of puppies. For one hour you can pay to just sit and play with these little guys which was WELL worth it.

They rotate throughout the day so some littles come out to snack and play while the others head to the back to sleep and swim at their leisure. Small children are not allowed at this cafe (only +15) to ensure the otters aren’t overwhelmed. There’s also a handler in the room at all times making sure everyone’s behaving themselves and keeping a close eye on when any of the otters need a break. The whole setup genuinely felt thoughtful and low stress for the animals, which made me love the experience even more.

I did not expect otters to be my Japan highlight. And yet here we are. If you love these little guys and you’re heading to Osaka, go.

You won’t regret it. 🦦 by @alayna_abroad
