Looking forward to visiting London in October. I plan to be there for a week and look forward to meeting musicians and learning about community. I am excited to share the news that we will spend two days developing, recording and presenting new brass music. Shout out to Sam Eastmond and Alex Bonney for organizing and introducing me to musicians. Excited to share the news that Artur Majewski will be coming in from Warsaw to join us.

Delighted to release 'Vee Music' by @tomchallenger1 today on the Earconnector label, release number six. A short run of tapes is available with hand printed card sleeves by Cath Roberts as well as 24bit WAV downloads, link in bio! 'Vee Music’ is a set of musical compositions by Tom Challenger, inspired by the ideas, games and sounds that were envisaged by his youngest son.
Featuring Cameron Scott (Euphonium), Otto Kampa (Alto Saxophone), Sam Nicholls (Drums/Objects/Percussion) and Challenger (Tenor Saxophone), the album showcases pieces that display an understandably non-linear and non-conformist sense of rhythmic and melodic placement; all which take inspiration from a unique musical perspective.
The album features amazing playing from some up and coming names on the London scene, it's great to have it on the label, please check it out. It's worth reminding that you can subscribe to Earconnector for £20 a year currently and get all 6 digital releases plus everything else coming out this year..! I have a new album out with @paularaegibson__ ‘In Another World We Will Live Forever’ on 33 Jazz records. It’s available on streaming and for digital purchase and there’s a link in my bio to the iTunes and Apple Music page.
It’s been satisfying to work on these songs in collaboration over a couple of years, with recording and production sessions in Hastings, London and Tuscany. Please have a listen!

Andrew Cartmel writes in UK Jazz News:
‘uniquely heartfelt and hits home hard, written as it is in memory of Gibson’s best friend Sue —it’s a challenging, healing and meditative assessment of the fresh hurt of recent death, conjuring a unique soundscape with a dreamy undertow carrying us off to an underworld of memory, love and loss.
In this case the raw wound of recent bereavement provided the raw material for their music. During their long friendship Gibson and Sue constantly exchanged voice messages (“I found myself with thousands of her messages — music in itself”) and these formed the basis for a video by Gibson. Working with Bonney she created and recorded a soundtrack to accompany the video, which was shown at an art installation in Tokyo in October 2025.
This collaboration proved so fruitful that it continued, growing and developing into a new album with the resonant and highly apt title In Another World We Will Live Forever. Gibson describes it as “an ode to friendship” and it is that and considerably more.
The music fashioned by Gibson and Bonney does indeed evoke another world' Sammy Stein writes on Medium:

‘The music moves through emotional and sonic spaces that feel almost suspended between worlds. Bonney’s visionary electronics don’t just accompany Rae Gibson’s vocals; they deepen and amplify them, creating an atmosphere that feels immersive, spectral, and oddly transcendent, as if the listener is afforded fleeting glimpses into another, almost tangible dimension.’ by @soundenvelope

Pando Pando of the talented Jem Doulton, Al Bonney and Will Glaser are back for a record third time with Mirror TV. In this release party (what do they have in store for us?), their live set will create a dialogue with the Stoke Newington Church. Percussion, electronics, visuals, a spectacle to behold. Very happy to announce the release of Brass Mask’s 3rd full album, ‘Cygnus’, out Friday 27th of February, on Earconnector. Available as download, limited edition run of cassettes with cases hand printed by @cathroberts (random tape colours!) - no streaming!. Also, a limited run of A3 posters of the album artwork (including download) are available on 190gsm recycled card, risograph-printed with eco-friendly rice-based inks by @cathroberts. Link in bio!

To celebrate this, Brass Mask release the album @vortexjazzclub, on April 3rd 2026

“In 2024, after a 7 year hiatus, Brass Mask convened again for a short series of concerts, picking up on some ideas not yet finished, whilst expanding the group of musicians that have contributed to its sound over the years.

The intensity and directness, focus on melody, bass lines and textures that were hallmarks of Brass Mask’s previous releases (‘Spy Boy’, (Babel, 2014) and ‘Live’ (Babel, 2017)) can still be heard on this latest live recording. On Cygnus, Brass Mask begins to move differently, accessing various lines of connectivity and modularity. Ensemble sections swarm into solo sections and different materials, all with a sense of direction that can be expected from an ensemble that first performed in 2012.

For this recording, a host of new names join existing members (@tomchallenger1 @crowzone @jonscottdrums @rorysimmonsmusic @albonney)
: Miguel Gorodi @miguelgorodi (Trumpet), Cameron Scott @cameronscott159 (Euphonium), Caius Williams @caiuswilliams_(Electric Bass) and Noah Ojumu @noah_ojumu (Percussion). All are vital parts of the improvised music and jazz scenes in London and beyond, and each fit seamlessly into the proceedings here. The addition of Electric Guitar (Rory Simmons) adds a new dimension to previous recordings, further expanding the possibilities of the Brass Mask’s sound.” by @soundenvelope

DAVE HOLLAND, NORMA WINSTONE, LONDON VOCAL PROJECT  - Vital Spark (Music of Kenny Wheeler)

‘Vital Spark brings together jazz greats Dave Holland and Norma Winstone to perform some of Kenny Wheeler’s final works written for Jazz ensemble and choir. It features an all-star line-up plus the choir of the London Vocal Project directed by Pete Churchill’

As a teenager I was fortunate enough to perform in the Berkshire Youth Jazz Orchestra at Brecon Jazz festival playing Kenny Wheeler’s Sweet time Suite with Kenny and Norma, what a gig for a young trumpeter! Kenny’s music has been in my life for a long time and I was honoured to work on this album recording and mixing, without doubt a career highlight! Many thanks to @nicksmartmusic - I’ve also known the wonderful @nikki.iles since my teenage big band days, and Nikki taught me composition at Middlesex University so I’m delighted to have worked on an album together!

Recorded at Livingstone studios with the amazing @marcuslocock, with assistant engineers Luke Farnell and Tris Ellis.

It was a great experience getting into the details of Kenny’s music and the stunning performances on the album in the mixing process with Pete and the other musicians. Of course it was an honour to work with @davehollandjazz who had inspiring focus and energy in long mixing sessions.

The album is beautifully mastered by the legendary Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound. As well as a whole host of classic American jazz albums including much of Bill Frisell’s catalog, Greg mastered Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’ and 'The Rhythm Of The Saints’ - two albums that were the soundtrack to my childhood!
