The watercolour shading technique I come back to time and time again!

In this video, I’m sharing how I build depth and softness using a simple neutral tint approach to bring my illustrations to life.

For this piece, I’ve used:
- Winsor & Newton Neutral Tint Watercolour Tube
- Winsor & Newton Watercolour Sable Brush (perfect for those larger shaded areas)
- Winsor & Newton Cotman Brushes for finer details
- Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolour Pan
- Winsor & Newton Promarker Watercolour Pens

Sometimes the simplest techniques are the ones that stick! If you’ve got a question, drop me a message in the comments.

There’s a simple explanation… but where’s the fun in telling you? 😉

Some of the best background details in Biff, Chip & Kipper are the little things many people don’t notice at first 👀

When I was illustrating the books, I loved hiding extra stories within the background of the story! Here are a few of my favourites… did you ever spot any?

I’ve been spending a few days in beautiful Venice, where we’ve been enjoying some rather lovely music along the way! We went to hear the wonderful Elysian Singers of London, an excellent chamber choir in which our friend sings, and also took in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by the Vivaldi Baroque Ensemble at the beautiful Chiesa della Pietà.

Oh… and we’ve also eaten a lot of pasta! 🍝

I thought I’d bring Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy along for the ride in this latest drawing. Have you ever visited Venice? What was your favourite part?

Happy Halloween! Something has given Floppy quite a fright… Watch till the end to find out what’s spooked him!

Wishing you all a wonderfully spooky Halloween! 🎃

Thank you for all your brilliant suggestions for where you’d like the Magic Key to take you! I’ve picked one to illustrate, inspired by a comment about something I drew into the background of a story many years ago…

You all know I love sneaking silly, random details into the backgrounds of my illustrations, so it’s always fun when you spot them! This time, I’ve taken one of those little background details and given it a story of its own.

Watch until the end to see what I came up with… and perhaps there’s a little more to this story than meets the eye! 👀🍞

Does anyone else know the feeling? 😂 You’ve got pins and needles, leg’s cramping and you desperately need the loo… but there’s a sleeping pet on your lap, and you can’t bring yourself to move them!

I can relate to dad here on pretty much most mornings…😂🥴

Where would you go if you had the Magic Key? I want to bring one of your answers to life in my next illustration on here!

Would you travel back in time, visit somewhere you’ve always dreamed of, explore another planet, or take a trip somewhere completely unexpected?

Comment and let me know! I’m looking forward to seeing where the Magic Key takes us…

Before Biff, Chip and Kipper, there was a rather different possibility… 👀 I was once asked to submit some sample cartoons for The Times, with the potential of becoming their political cartoonist!

I sent these in, but the job went to someone else. Looking back, it’s funny to think how differently things might have turned out!

Here’s a glimpse at some of the work I was doing before Floppy and the Magic Key came along…

What an evening at the Saatchi Gallery! Enormous thanks to @winsorandnewton for asking me to be part of their wonderful Art Mail initiative. It was such fun getting involved and creating my own postcard for the project.

Seeing thousands of hand-painted postcards from artists all around the world, all brought together in one exhibition was really incredible. There’s such a fantastic variety of styles, techniques, ideas and stories in each and every piece on display.

The exhibition is now open to the public for the next two weeks at the Saatchi Gallery in London, so if you’re in the area, do go and have a look. There’s plenty to see!

Thank you again to everyone at Winsor & Newton for having me involved, it was a really fantastic evening 🎨

The caretaker had one job… but then Floppy arrived! Swipe along to see what happened next 👀😂

It’s officially the first day of autumn! What’s the thing you like most about this time of year?

For me, it’s a dog walk on a crisp blue day, with all the trees above being bright orange and red - Bliss! 👌
