Skirts - 4th October @thehorsehospital
A selection of archival footage and videos. Format very much inspired by two of my favorite events at the hot hospital: 1800-HOT-DUCK Video Night and Micah Moses of Music of Mind Control’s video night also. But not as good.
I called this one Skirts because

C u in a month! Tickets via HH website / not suitable for children!!!! by @alexia.marmara

It’s easier for history to keep the grisly. Sofía Bassi was remembered mostly for her incarceration. @fundacionsofiabassi, spearheaded by her daughter in law Tere Touyet, has been sheltering and fanning out all that glimmered most in Bassi’s lifetime. My latest piece about she who attended her private view from prison via a phone call, filled the halls of NASA, posed for Kati Horna and always wore white is now on @awomensthing

[[Bassi ‘egged’ two of my most magical friends and myself, blasting herself into our lives in the most tantalising way (see video.) Pictured are (a lot of) her beautiful paintings, some courtesy of the Fundación and others from ephemera found in different corners of the world. I’m haunted but whoa what a spectre! Here I go! putting the I in archive again!]] by @alexia.marmara

Alexia Marmara is a researcher, curator, archivist and writer specialising in uncovering the uncelebrated. She focuses on stories that are left untold in an effort to correct bias in narratives within the history of art and culture. She centres the humanisation of archival objects in order to speak of fragile stories. Her process defies the drawbacks in our institutionalised systems of remembering and collecting as she prioritises breathing alternatives to our silencing modes of representation within historical research.

She is the instigator of the excavation of Mexican painter Froylán Ojeda (1932-1991) whose significant career has been practically erased from contemporary discourse. Working with oral histories and archival investigation she is the first researcher to compile a written biography of the artist’s life and œuvre.

Safe travels @alexia.marmara and see you soon. by @alexia.marmara

Arborescence is a favorite word. Used in all my essays, its foreverness constantly collected and digested. Twigs are even better when paired with another word: efflorescence. New branches create new buds and blooms. The arborescent and efflorescent research into Froylán brought new beginnings, through his offshoots I met his friend Puri. With her we are granted permission to languish and in Froylán we find what’s místico in la hermosura equivocada. I love silence I hate stillness and I’m naming my daughter Intuition.
Slides from last night’s talk at @lost.property____ : ‘Silence, Arborescence and its Efflorescence.’ Thank you 11 13 @letty_etc - and @ivorypijin @emariamhe @hibenfreeman for the unbelievable beauty of having Froylán and Puri sitting with Brian Wilson, Melissa Molinaro and… FASHION!! by @alexia.marmara

What if a painting is received rather than invented?

This summer in Los Angeles, curator Laura Whitcomb staged two shows on artists who understood their work as messages from beyond. “Dynaton: Convocation of Radiant Beings” at Château Shatto brought back the 1951 San Francisco exhibition, now with the women who shaped the group, from Alice Rahon to Luchita Hurtado. “Dictation from the Other Side” at Karma gathered mediumistic work by Madge Gill, Paulina Peavy, Unica Zürn, Anna Zemánková and others.

Writer Alexia Marmara looks at both shows and at dictation as a missing term in modern art. Read the full essay, link in bio.

A few years ago I was the luckiest ever and had the wild opportunity to visit Leonora Carrington’s house on Calle Chihuahua. For so many her art reads like a blackboard jungle within which artists and thinkers can seek endless levels of humanness beyond bones. Mainly - she brought a perfect science to womanhood. The staff told me of strange occurrences caught on camera when no one else was in the house: Motherfaith melting laws and making new ones for ever ever ever and ever… every one of them seeping through her octagon tiles. The house is now closed to the public, its contents moved elsewhere or something y no me gusta by @alexia.marmara

CABRÓN!!! by @alexia.marmara

We mainly remember Bosnian dancer Moa Mandu through paintings by Egon Schiele. We know who she was married to: Erwin Osen. We know of the men around her but the rest of her is history’s.

Another episode of looking for something that’s hardly there anymore - with more coming soon, I hope.
