Meet the Author 🌿

A COVEN OF WITCHES is only a month away from release! Wow.

Little me, who wrote her very first story about a spoon making its way across an evil kitchen and who loved the thrill of sprinting downstairs in the dark to grab a snack and then racing back up because she was afraid of the monster she invented, would be so proud of this collection.

To celebrate the publication date creeping closer, here are some facts about its author!

💜 I was born and raised in Southern California.

💚 I love cartoons. My all-time favorites are Steven Universe and Invader Zim.

💜 Horror is my genre of choice, whether that’s books or movies.

💚 I’m an animal lover and previously worked for many years as a veterinary assistant. I have the cutest 9-year-old ball python named Sycamore, and over the years I’ve owned and fostered my fair share of dogs, cats, rats, lizards, and more.

💜 French fries are my favorite food group.

💚 I find skulls aesthetically pleasing. I have many items that are either shaped like skulls or have skulls printed on them. I also have a small collection of ethically sourced animal bones.

💜 First time I ever remember being afraid of a story was Mercer Mayer’s The Smelly Mystery.

💚 I draw in my free time as a form of stress relief.

💜 I’ve had molluscophobia since I was a wee lad.

💚 My favorite stories in A Coven of Witches to read aloud are “Tinsel and Terror,” “Night Train,” and “Dragon Rot.” My favorite stories to write were “Sympathy for the Dead,” “Dinner Party,” and “Scavenger Hunt.”

A Coven of Witches releases 7/14/26.

We begin… on October 1st. 🗯️💬 by @alexispowellstories

I’ve been eagerly awaiting a little chill in the air and the first signs of fall in the trees. I read pretty voraciously all year round, but every autumn I find myself completely absorbed in books and writing. There’s something about the combination of comfort and moodiness in the weather that seems to invite adventure and exploration. And perhaps a healthy dose of mischief. And there’s no mischief quite like sneaking into haunted houses and seeing what lies just beyond the boundaries that have contained us! 👻🧙🎃

HOWEVER…

With mischief, even playful mischief, often comes consequences. Horror stories, myths, and legends - some that are real pieces of history and some that are just folklore - have existed since pre-history to help keep mischievous (bored?) children safe. “A Coven of Witches” sits right alongside “Ghostly Ghastly Tales” and “Creepy Campfire Stories” as a collection of children’s horror stories with graded scare levels. As with the previous two entries, each story includes an endnote regarding origins and real history. Readers will find themselves immersed in a collection of tales that spans both the globe and history.

And that glow-in-the-dark cover alone is worth the price of admission for a Halloween-themed library this fall!

That she is! What a delight it was to chat with my beautiful, witty, stylish mentor about inspiration for spooky stories, what it was like getting an MFA, snails (of course), and so much more. Thanks to everyone who came to celebrate!
