Thank you, @artnet , Vittoria Benzine, and Richard Whittington, for highlighting Camilo Godoy's show "Neither One Nor the Other, but a Wound" curated by Angelica Arbelaez as one of the 6 not to be missed!

Today, Miami is a playground for the rich and famous. But, from 500 B.C.E. through the mid-1700s, the tropical idyll was predominantly home to the Tequesta tribe, vanquished by the Spanish, and then the English. For New York-based Colombian artist Camilo Godoy, the echoes of this history abound across America and the wider world. These influences come to the fore in the artist’s first Miami solo show, staged at the city’s longstanding contemporary art gallery Dot Fiftyone.

The exhibition takes its title from a poem about colonialism, and centers on an orange-lit room screening Renacemos a cada instante (We are reborn at every moment)—a video immortalizing the performance from Godoy’s New Museum residency this past year. The footage features three dancers performing choreography “inspired by mourning practices that celebrate the cycles of life and death,” a release states. Three further photos from Godoy’s series “What did they really see” depict the artist in enigmatic black on black, performing his take on Indigenous dances that Christian missionaries once recorded with disdain. In its entirety, the exhibition is a movement-driven healing rite, rendered across mediums. by @alfredoguzman8

CAMILO GODOY , What did they actually see? (“Depravity”), 2018 (printed 2024) Archival pigment print on aluminum, 70 x 48 inches is one of the artist’s work on his current exhibition “Neither One Nor the Other, but a Wound” curated by Angelica Arbelaez.

“Neither One Nor the Other, but a Wound” is an exhibition by New York-based Colombian artist Camilo Godoy, curated by Angelica Arbelaez. This thought-provoking showcase presents photography, performance, and sculpture to delve into historical and contemporary issues. Marking his first solo exhibition in Miami, Godoy expands his exploration of collective movement and choreography with new works and recent photographs. Thank you Giuliana Brida and @cultured_mag , for including Camilo Godoy: Neither One Nor the Other, but a Wound, an exhibition curated by Angelica Arbelaez, in your list of “11 Shows That Will Be the Talk of Miami Art Week.” Why It’s Worth a Look: Bogotá-born, New York-based artist Camilo Godoy examines documents from the 17th to the 19th centuries that condemned the dancing practices of Indigenous communities in what is now Colombia. Curated by Angelica Arbelaez, the show sees Godoy turning the lens on himself and enacting the movements described in these texts.
Know Before You Go: Working across video, photography, sculpture, and performance, Godoy, who was the New Museum’s artist in residence this past year, reclaims the importance of identity—and its interpretation—beyond rigid categories. This is his debut Miami solo show. by @alfredoguzman8

Exhibition: Miami Design District Open Invitational

The project seeks giving visibility to the invisible and providing fair compensation for their work. Through workshops led by David Rohn at Camillus House, Miami, authentic pieces will be developed, exhibited, and sold, fostering a new relationship between art, the creator, and the audience.

A bridge between personal expression and social connection. In this model, the audience rediscovers the joy of acquiring works for their emotional impact rather than as objects of speculation.

We work aims to be a tool for navigating life with eyes, ears, and hearts more attuned to humanity. Art is but a glimpse of divinity that artists can reveal to us.

Now on view through November 20th, CYNTHIA COHEN: “THE SHAME”. Do you dare to pull back the curtain? Join us for Progressive Art Brunch @progressiveartbrunch this Sunday October 6, 11 AM - 4 PM.
Visit PAB galleries all in one. The exhibition is intended for a mature audience; viewer discretion is advised. Exhibition on view through November 20, 2025.

Through new ways of seeing and thinking about women, Cohen creates a space of intimacy between the work and the audience or voyeur. The sensual red velvet, reminiscent of brothel sofas, cinema seats, and theater curtains, pulls the viewer in, bringing them face-to-face with these erotic scenes. A private gaze in a public space. A distance that complicates the traditional role of the voyeur. A woman enjoying her own sexuality. A man at her service. Cohen’s series of paintings examines the connections between the artist and mainstream cinematic representations of forbidden eroticism and rebellion. Cohen’s approach to these images, through incisive figuration, both references and questions the history of art, bodies, and the male and female gaze. A shared foundation lies in these formative representations. What did they shape? What bodies did they bring into being? What did they allow us to be and do?
Excerpt from the essay “PORN AND SHAME” written by Larisa Zmud about this new series of paintings by Cynthia Cohen. Show Curator: Laura Isola
