i never really talked about my injury when it happened… i had been looking forward to this summer for so long. jamaica, shows, tour dates, training, travelling. everything i love and everything i had worked so hard for! then on my 4th day there, i fractured my ankle. in one moment, the entire summer i had pictured for myself changed. plans were cancelled, opportunities were missed. i wasn’t ready to talk about it then. i think i was still trying to process how much it affected me, physically and mentally. but looking back now, i know this was a huge part of my summer and a huge part of my story too. apparently “you can’t dance” was never really an option for me 🤣 being in jamaica, my favourite place in the world! surrounded by everything i came there for, while not being able to actually dance the way i wanted to was one of the hardest parts. but dance is too much a part of me to completely sit still… so crutches, chair and all, we found a way! just trying to make the best of a situation i definitely didn’t want to be in 🤣 but i’m still so grateful that even from a chair, i got to keep learning, watching, taking things in and being around people who inspire me! this meant more to me than they probably knew. 🥹 my friends and mentors kept finding ways to include me, keep me involved and remind me that i was still part of everything… even when my spirits honestly weren’t very high. forever grateful for that! THANK YOU 🫶🏾 behind all the videos of me still trying to make the best of it… i was in a LOT of pain. 😭 probably one of the hardest parts. sitting in my favourite place on earth, surrounded by the thing i love most, and having to watch instead of participate 💔 ”POSE” 🤣 the injury meant missed shows, missed tour dates, missed training and opportunities i had worked really hard for. it forced me to slow down in a way i definitely did not want to. i’m still not fully back, but i’m finally ready to start working my way there. one step at a time. ❤️‍🩹 comeback loading… by @aliaross
fun fact - watchyahwinnipeg hasn’t hosted weekly dancehall classes since 2023 😩 a little throwback to some of the energy, memories & people who helped build this community from 2021–2023. 💛 thank you to everyone who came to a class, trained with us or supported along the way, you’re part of our story! weekly classes eventually had to pause due to factors such as low enrolment, so as we bring them back, we hope winnipeg is ready for them again! we just want to keep creating spaces to learn, train & continue growing the love for dancehall in our city. if you want to see it stick around, come dance with us! Female Dancehall: Every Saturday 3-4pm Male style Dancehall: Every Thursday 6:30-7:30pm #dancehall #winnjpegdancehall #watchyahwinnipeg #femaledancehall #winnipegdance by @aliaross
