I visited a school and it reminded me exactly why I wrote Alina’s Glowing Afro.
A parent reached out to share that her daughter had started questioning her worth because of comments about her skin and hair. That broke my heart, but it also confirmed everything.
Children shouldn’t have to wait until adulthood to feel beautiful, seen, and proud of who they are. That starts in the classroom. That starts with the books on the shelf.
Schools matter. Parents matter. Books matter.
And representation? It’s not optional, it’s essential. 🌟

Happy Mother’s Day to all the phenomenal women. 🤍

To those with children, those praying for children, those who mother other people’s children, and those who have experienced the pain of losing a child, we honour you today.

Thank you for the love, wisdom, strength and sacrifice you pour out every single day. I’ve been so blessed to learn from and be surrounded by incredible mothers over the years, and it’s beautiful to see how you continue to pour your unconditional love into your children.

Thank you for supporting everything we do and for being real-life superheroes.

Last week I had the honour of visiting a primary school in Essex for World Book Day.

I delivered an assembly, read my book Alina’s Glowing Afro to the children, and spent time signing copies afterwards.

Before walking in, I’ll admit I felt a little nervous. It’s a predominantly white school, and I wondered how the children would receive the story.

But my message that day wasn’t about convincing them to love Afro hair.

My message was about something bigger.

Learning to celebrate everyone’s differences.

We spoke about how the things that make us different are actually the things that make us powerful. Our uniqueness is what allows us to shine our light.

Whether our hair is coily, straight or wavy, every single person carries something special about them.

We also talked about the power of words.

Children are naturally curious, and it’s okay to ask questions. But we’re never too young to learn how to use our words in a way that is kind, respectful and uplifting to others.

That’s the power of books.

Books help us understand people who may look different from us, live differently from us, or come from different backgrounds. They allow us to celebrate stories from all walks of life.

Before I left, I gave the children a small challenge:

Next week, find one way to include someone you might not normally include.

Sit with someone new.
Play with someone different.
Start a conversation you might not usually have.

Sometimes the smallest acts of inclusion can make the biggest difference.

What stayed with me the most was watching how naturally children embraced their differences.

Children are born with a beautiful innocence. They don’t see difference the way adults sometimes do.

They simply see people.

And moments like that remind me why stories like this matter. ✨ by @rufinastuartt

Writing this book wasn’t about being seen. It was about being obedient.

There were so many moments I wanted to stop. Moments I felt unqualified, underprepared, and honestly… unsure if anyone would even care.

But I kept going. Not because I had it all figured out, but because I felt called to.

And watching little ones engage with a story that was built in faith? That’s a reward no algorithm could ever give me.

But I chose obedience over fear, and Alina’s Glowing Afro was born.

If you’re sitting on something; book, a business, a dream, this is your sign. You don’t need to be ready. You just need to start.

If your dream is still in your head and not in your hands, I hope this reminds you that done is better than perfect. Start anyway.
