The Allegheny County Jail held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the grand opening of the new employee fitness center.

The initiative to establish a dedicated fitness space for jail staff was led by members of the jail's Corrections Association for Relaxation, Entertainment and Support (CARES). The fitness center features free weights, cardio and strength machines, a walking track, and even a pickleball court. This project was entirely funded by staff donations and fundraisers.

Unit Manager and CARES member Eugene Judge said the group has organized several different projects and events in the attempt to improve the environment for ACJ employees and said the creation of the fitness center is the “biggest thing yet.”

Hidden Histories | Episode 3

Some of Pittsburgh’s greatest stories are about people whose names should be much more familiar to all of us.
Mary Lou Williams is one of them.

I went to the Heinz History Center to learn more about this incredible Pittsburgh musician who started playing piano as a child in East Liberty and went on to write arrangements for Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman and mentor generations of jazz musicians.

Her story is a reminder of just how much talent has come out of our neighborhoods.

And it’s also a reminder that history is not just about buildings and dates. It’s about people. Their creativity. Their courage. Their persistence. And the mark they leave on the world.

I’m grateful to the historians who helped bring Mary Lou’s story to life as part of our Hidden Histories map.

We launched Forward with Families in April because we want to be the BEST place to raise a family.

Our first initiative aims to create 5,000 new childcare and out-of-school-time slots over the next five years—a response to what families across our county already know too well: finding affordable, dependable care that fits their schedules is far too difficult.

Today, we announced significant new investments to help us meet that goal. I want to thank The Heinz Endowments for their $3 million commitment, recognizing that childcare is fundamental economic infrastructure—it directly supports workforce participation and family stability.

We are also proposing $2.5 million in the 2027 County budget, building on the $400,000 invested in 2026, as part of our commitment to bringing more partners to the table and driving sustainable solutions.

When families have the support they need, children thrive, parents have more choices, and our entire region grows stronger. by @alleghenycounty

Department of Public Works crews don’t work themselves to death – but they do work incredibly hard.

That includes paving 18 miles of roadway, responding to 1,119 service requests, inspecting and clearing 7,289 inlets and catch basins, fabricating and installing more than 12,000 signs and decals, and much more.
