THE MOGADISHU MILE

On October 4, 1993, All Secure co-founder @tomsatterly & the men of Operation: Gothic Serpent entered Mogadishu, Somalia on what was meant to be a simple, short mission. Instead, they found themselves locked in an 18 hour gunfight after the loss of supporting air craft. Tom, along with many of his brothers, made the harrowing 2.4 mile run under gunfire to the extraction point outside of the city.

This fight, later named “The Battle of Mogadishu”, is best known as the battle portrayed in the movie “Black Hawk Down”.

Eighteen American servicemen lost their lives in the Battle of Mogadishu. That number has since been eclipsed by the number of Mogadishu veterans who have taken their own lives in the years following the battle.

At All Secure Foundation, we’re working every day to provide free mental health support to the remaining veterans of the Battle of Mogadishu and beyond.

Join us in this fight by pledging to run, walk or jog the Mogadishu Mile on October 4th & 5th in remembrance of the men of Operation: Gothic Serpent.

I used to think a good marriage meant being good at marriage.

Almost twelve years into ours, I’m starting to think it might mean something else entirely.

Tom and I have gotten a lot of things wrong.

We’ve misunderstood each other. Hurt each other. Been selfish. Been stubborn. We’ve had conversations that brought us closer and others that changed us in ways we’re still understanding.

We’ve had seasons where we couldn’t get enough of each other and seasons where “till death do us part” felt like an unnecessarily specific timeline.

I used to think a really good marriage somehow avoided all of that.

Now I think it’s something much less impressive. Like two people who keep being willing to come back after they’ve gotten it wrong.

Not pretending it didn’t happen.
Not keeping score.
Not one person doing all the returning.

Just eventually looking across whatever distance got created and saying, in one way or another…

Come back over here.
And then doing it again.
And again.

Almost twelve years in, I don’t think being good at marriage means getting it right all the time.

I think it means being willing to look at yourself. To tell the truth. To change. To forgive. To keep learning the person beside you as they change too.

And when you lose each other somewhere along the way, to be willing to do the work of finding your way back.

Tom and I have done that more than once.

And every time we do, we know each other a little better. We love each other a little differently. And somehow, what we’ve built becomes a little more ours. 🤎 by @allsecurefoundation

Blended families aren’t broken. They’re built.

Tom and I have a blended family. And like most things worth building, it has taken patience, grace, and a willingness to grow together. Love doesn’t erase the complexities. It gives us a reason to work through them.

📌 As ASF Coach Deb reminds us, parenting in a blended family isn’t about replacing roles. It’s about expanding them.

Children thrive when the adults in their lives offer consistency, emotional safety, and respect for one another’s place in the family.

Four reminders from our coaches:

1. Lead with steadiness, not perfection.
Kids watch how we handle complexity more than they expect us to solve it.

2. Affection looks different in every home.
What matters is that children feel seen, valued, and emotionally safe.

3. Co-parenting is a long game.
Small, predictable behaviors build trust over time.

4. Your partnership sets the tone.
When adults communicate clearly and honor boundaries, kids feel anchored.

Blended families are living proof that love can be restructured, expanded, and strengthened.

It’s not easy. But it’s deeply worth it.

Thank you, Coach Deb, for reminding us that building a family isn’t about getting every role perfect. It’s about showing up for one another.

At All Secure Foundation, we understand that family life can be complicated, especially when navigating the unique challenges of the special operations community.

If your family could use support, connect with an ASF coach. We’re here for you.

Some of the most important conversations happen behind closed doors.

The ones about marriage. Communication. Anger. Identity. The weight of service. And the challenges of finding your way forward when life doesn’t look the way you expected.

At All Secure Foundation, we believe those conversations matter.

That’s why we’re bringing you Tips from the SCIF, an ongoing series featuring practical insight, honest conversations, and real-world guidance from the coaches who work with our Special Operations community.

Coaching is at the heart of what we do. ♥️

Our coaching team is made up of Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) who serve as coaches, bringing their professional experience and understanding of the unique demands of military life to the warriors, veterans, and families we support.

Through this series, we’ll introduce you to our coaches, share their perspectives, and explore the challenges that don’t always get talked about.

Relationships. Communication. Reconnection. Purpose. Life after service. And everything in between.

No judgment. No pretending to have it all figured out. Just meaningful conversations and practical tools to help you move forward.

Asking for guidance shouldn’t be something you have to work up the courage to do.

You don’t have to wait until things fall apart to start making them better.

SOF warriors: If you or your spouse could benefit from coaching, we invite you to learn more at allsecurefoundation.org.

Welcome to Tips from the SCIF.

Real conversations. Practical guidance. Stronger warriors. Stronger families.

Coming home and leaving a place are two very different things.

33 years ago today, Tom was a 26 year old Delta Force operator in Mogadishu.

He was surrounded by men who had trained together, served together, and trusted one another with their lives.

On October 3rd and 4th, 1993, they fought for one another, carried one another, and went toward their brothers when others might have turned away.

Some went beyond what most of us could ever fathom, laying down their lives for another.

There is terrible darkness in war.
And there is also courage, sacrifice, loyalty, and love.

For a long time, part of Tom remained in Mogadishu. Even 33 years later, the smell of bleach, oppressive heat, a sound, a face, or a memory can take him right back. October 3rd. 4th. 6th.

There were years when the weight of what happened nearly consumed the life he came home to live.

Slowly, he faced it, the battle, the loss, the choices that followed, and the warrior he had been and will always be.

He rebuilt his life. Is still rebuilding.

He no longer lives in Mogadishu, but he will always carry parts of it with him. Especially the hearts of his brothers.

Some of his brothers never came home. Some came home and were lost in the years that followed. Others are still here, carrying memories and names that have never left them.

Today, remember all of them: those who answered the call, fought beside one another, gave their lives, and came home to continue fighting battles few could see.

Remember their families. The incredible weight they have carried, too.

They are no longer the young men who walked into Mogadishu. They are husbands, fathers, grandfathers…

But some part of them will always remain together on those streets.

“Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me.”
Isaiah 6:8

October 3. October 4. October 6 1993.

Never forgotten. by @allsecurefoundation

Sometimes anger isn’t the first emotion we feel. It’s the one that feels safest.

For those who have experienced trauma, vulnerability can feel dangerous. Fear, shame, grief, rejection, or helplessness may be difficult to express, especially when life has taught us that showing emotion means exposing weakness.

Anger can become a form of protection. It creates a sense of strength and control when, underneath, we may feel anything but strong or in control.

But here’s an important distinction: Understanding where anger comes from doesn’t mean excusing the harm it can cause.

Anger isn’t always the enemy. Sometimes, it’s a signal that something deeper needs our attention.

The work begins when we learn to recognize what’s beneath our reactions, communicate what we’re actually feeling, and respond without hurting ourselves or the people we love.

The next time anger rises, ask yourself: What am I feeling that might be harder to face than the anger itself?

At All Secure Foundation, our coaches help Special Operations warriors, spouses, and couples recognize these patterns, strengthen communication, and build healthier relationships.

Because awareness is where change begins.

33 years ago today

August 26, 1993 — the day we deployed to Mogadishu. I still remember the feeling of getting the call to load up: that jacked-up mix of adrenaline and excitement warriors get when they know they’re headed into a country in crisis. You train your whole life for that moment. You don’t know what’s coming, nobody could have known what October 3rd and 4th would turn into.

33 years since that battle, but for so many of the men who fought it, the fight never really ended. More warriors who survived Mogadishu have been lost to suicide than were lost in the battle itself. That’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud, and it’s exactly why All Secure Foundation exists.

We exist for the warrior. We exist for the spouse. We exist for the family who first heard about that night on the news back home, and then spent years living with what came after.

This year, we’re asking you to run the Mogadishu Mile — anywhere, anytime, around October 3rd in honor of the men who fought that day and the families who carried it with them.

Set up your run. Set up a fundraiser. We have zero admin costs taken from
Donor funds. 100% of every donation goes directly to programs helping Special Operations families heal from the trauma of war, strengthen their relationships, and give our warrior spouses real tools to understand and carry what they’re facing.

Head to allsecurefoundation.org for everything you need to set up your run and your donation page.

Run for them. Run for the ones still fighting it at home. by @allsecurefoundation

There was a point when I was banging a gun against my head.

I was ashamed. Embarrassed. And underneath all of it was the same story on repeat - I’m not good enough.

Jen kept pushing me because she loves me. But sometimes what I heard was, I’m not healing fast enough. I’m failing her.

We had to figure that out together. And eventually I realized something…

We’ve been trained to do a lot of hard shit. But most of us were never trained for what happens when the battle comes from inside.

So get trained.

That’s why we started All Secure Foundation. We teach Special Operations warriors and couples how to process the pain, understand what’s happening, and build a life worth fighting for.

PTS doesn’t belong to the military or law enforcement. Trauma is human. So whoever you are, if you’re hurting, stop treating it like something you should already know how to handle.

You don’t grow through comfort. You grow by going through the hard shit and learning what to do with it.

No matter who you are get your training.

Today. Right fucking now. by @allsecurefoundation

WE’RE DONE FIGHTING THE WRONG BATTLE. 🇺🇸

For years, we’ve been fighting a battle that has nothing to do with our mission.

Since at least 2020, we’ve dealt with repeated visibility issues, hidden comments, restricted reach, and countless attempts to get answers from Instagram and Meta.

Enough.

Here’s something we learned in Special Operations:

You don’t waste resources fighting a battle that doesn’t advance the mission.

You assess. You adapt. You redirect your efforts.

And you get back to work.

SO WE’RE CONSOLIDATING FORCES.

Virago, SOF warrior/spouse coaching, marriage retreats, online courses, resources, Camps, and community updates are coming together under ONE social media roof: All Secure.

We’re not retreating. We’re not reducing our commitment.

We’re putting our energy where it actually matters.

Into our warriors.
Into our spouses.
Into our marriages and families.
Into coaching, training, and support that change lives.

Social media will remain a place to share information and stay connected. But we’re done spending our energy fighting algorithms.

OUR MISSION DOESN’T LIVE ON SOCIAL.
It lives in the conversations between warriors and coaches. In marriages finding their way back. In spouses who finally have someone in their corner.

THAT is where our resources belong.

NOW WE NEED YOUR BACKUP.

Follow this page. Share our updates. Tag your teammates. Help us reach the people who need us.

Most importantly, VISIT OUR WEBSITE.

That’s where warriors, spouses, and couples can connect with a coach, explore programs, and get the support they need.

We’re not going anywhere.

We’re just done fighting the wrong battle.

ONE TEAM. ONE MISSION. ALL SECURE.

You can disrupt the comms. You can’t stop the mission. 🇺🇸 by @allsecurefoundation
