We are so grateful for the family we are building all over the country!

Shout out to @_de_jon_ of @althomela inviting us to co-present at the California Preservation Conference! Along with other amazing leaders we shared our work around stewarding memory, place and family.

While we couldn’t be there in the physical, we virtually flew in and had a good ole time. There is a network of artists who are doing deeply rooted work. But trust, getting out to the west coast is happening soon!

Can’t wait to share physical space with these amazing humans!

this room holds 70 years of history.

this room holds the story of my family’s migration Westward ⬅️ in 1963, they planted roots in this home in South L.A. and built the foundation upon which we gather.

this room holds Black Los Angeles history.

this room is our legacy.

On July 12, we gathered around the lemon tree for our dreamLAB Summer Salon & Yard Sale, honoring the voices, visions, and memories that root us in South Menlo Avenue. 🌿🍋

Through story, song, and shared treasures, we celebrate Black Ecologies and oral environmental histories, preserving the land, love, and legacy that shape our future. 🪏🪴🏡

The Out(sider) Preservation Initiative is proud to celebrate a.l.t. ^home as a grantee! Based in South Central Los Angeles, this creative residency and neighborhood archive preserves the migration stories of Black Southern families who relocated to the area in the 1950s and 60s. Through oral histories, memory mapping, exhibitions, and gatherings, they honor the past while creating spaces of connection, rest, and resilience. by @thecr8tvhouse

What’s going on inside the home? 🏡

🖤✨We’re preserving our legacy and honoring those who laid the foundation and paved the way. Listen to understand the history of a.l.t. ^home from our Founding Steward, jeremy de’jon guyton @_de_jon_ :

“My grandparents grew up in a small country town — Millport, Alabama. They met as kids, got married after high school, and had my dad. In 1961, they followed my great-grandparents to Los Angeles — and, in 1963, they bought this one-bedroom house in Westmont/Athens, South L.A.

My grandmother told me that when she first visited the house, she looked through the front window and saw a beautiful, big tree in the backyard. She said she just knew this was where she wanted to plant roots and raise her family.

My dad grew up in this home. I grew up in this home. I remember we celebrated birthdays, holidays — and, every occasion filled the house with food, music, laughter, and love.

Now, 60+ years later, we still gather, create, and nourish around the lemon tree” 🌳 🍋

🌻 a.l.t. ^home is a cultural archive and community gathering space that honors the dreams of our ancestors while creating space for Afro//queer futures to bloom. It’s a living monument — rooted in memory, nurtured with care, and blossoming in purpose.”
