A democracia não termina nas urnas. Enquanto povos indígenas seguem sendo mortos por defender seus territórios, não há vitória completa. Demarcar é direito. Proteger é dever do Estado. 🙏🏽🇧🇷 Brasil, eu te amo. by @amanda.gois__
TEN YEARS AGO, WE MADE THIS VIDEO AND ASKED PEOPLE TO HELP US MAKE A FILM. 🌿 We knew there was an extraordinary story to preserve. The vision began with Tashka Yawanawá, who understood the importance of documenting Tatá and preserving his story. With Tashka’s vision and the blessing of Chief Matsini Yawanawá—Tatá’s student—the journey that would become The Spirit of Tatá began. Director Jim Whitney traveled to the Yawanawá territory and found himself documenting the final five weeks of Tatá’s life with @jmbusquetss. Those weeks became the heart of a film that would take nearly a decade to complete. We searched for footage from before Jim arrived. @camillacoutinhosilva opened her archive to us and shared footage essential to telling this story—we simply could not have made the film without her contribution. Tashka Yawanawá and others shared invaluable material as well. Hundreds of hours of footage came together. We watched. We listened. We learned. The deeper we went, the more we understood the responsibility of what had been entrusted to us. This wasn’t a film to rush. Tatá spoke in the Yawanawá language, requiring a painstaking process of translation—not only of his words, but their meaning and context. There were different editors, cuts and structures as we searched for the film within all that material. Along the way, we created the SOFIE Foundation, and the journey became something larger than the film itself. Now, nearly ten years after this GoFundMe video, Chief Matsini and members of Tatá’s family are coming to Austin to experience The Spirit of Tatá on the big screen. Chief Matsini, who gave this project his blessing at the beginning, will be there to see where that blessing led. We hope you’ll share this moment with them. OCT 6 | Austin Film Society

This is your call to come and join the beautiful Yawanawá family this fall as they travel through California, Hawaii and Miami. You’ll be sure to connect to the Spirit of the Forest through sacred song, dance, and connection. This will be a portal of light during the times we are passing through for clarity, joy, and togetherness. These videos of Matsini and family were taken last October during our gathering for Sacred Bridge @menlaretreat — we saw many of our friends and family there, as we hope to do this coming year. We will be welcoming @mats.ini @kuru_ywnw @angelika_yawanawa @kenetsayny as the guardians of this profound trip. AUSTIN — THIS ONE IS SPECIAL. 🌿 A film can preserve a story. But a living tradition is carried by people. On October 6, we’ll gather at Austin Film Society for The Spirit of Tatá, joined by Matsini Yawanawá and members of Tatá’s family. The Spirit of Tatá brings us into the final days of Yawanawá elder and spiritual leader Tatá Yawanawá, as he works to transmit ancestral knowledge to the generations who will carry it forward. To experience this story on screen in the presence of his family brings another dimension to the film. Because Tatá’s story did not end with Tatá. It continues with his family. In his community. In the knowledge passed from one generation to the next. And in the responsibility of carrying that knowledge forward. This evening is more than a screening. It is an opportunity to gather and to witness the film together, hear from those connected to its story, and spend time in community afterward. Tuesday, October 6 Austin Film Society Doors — 6:30 PM Film — 7:00 PM Q&A with director Jim Whitney, producer Amber Voiles & special guest Matsini Yawanawá Gathering to follow 🌿 One film. One room. One evening together. Come witness the story. Honor the legacy. Be part of what carries it forward. Tickets at the link in bio. #TheSpiritOfTata #SOFIEFoundation #Yawanawa #AustinFilmSociety #AustinEvents by @amanda.gois__
🌿 MATSINI YAWANAWÁ • CALIFORNIA TOUR 🌿 It is a beautiful honor to welcome our beloved teacher Matsini Yawanawá and children Kuru, Kenetsayny & Anjelica back to California, carrying the prayers, songs, stories and living wisdom of the Yawanawá people of the Brazilian Amazon. 🪶🌿 This tour is an invitation to gather in community, to listen, to learn, to sing and to experience the depth of a tradition that has been carried and protected through generations. Matsini brings a powerful yet deeply heart-centered presence, sharing teachings from his culture and his connection to the forest through prayer, music, storytelling and traditional practices. For me, these gatherings are about so much more than an event. They are about relationship, reciprocity and remembrance — creating opportunities for Indigenous voices to be heard directly, supporting the continuation of their traditions, and building bridges between our communities. Each gathering will be a little different, with opportunities to experience Yawanawá music, prayer, teachings, community and connection. If you’ve been feeling called to deepen your relationship with the wisdom of the forest, learn directly from Indigenous tradition, or simply sit together in sacred community, we would love to welcome you. 🌿 Come with an open heart. 🪶 Come to listen. 🔥 Come to remember. Email connect@matsiniyawanawatour.com for more information on additional tour dates in Austin, Miami and Hawaii! #Yawanawa #IndigenousWisdom #AmazonRainforest #CaliforniaTour #livemusic @mats.ini @kuru_ywnw @kenetsayny @angelika_yawanawa @amanda.gois__ by @amanda.gois__
Every year, more people around the world turn to ancestral plant medicine in search of healing. This growing interest carries with it a responsibility: to expand this wisdom without losing what makes it sacred and safe. We honor those who carry this knowledge, and the memory of those who protected it before us. In this way, we highlight the words of Rasu Yawanawá, spiritual leader and medicine man of the Yawanawá people, grandson of the great pajé Tata Txanu Natasheini, speaking at PCU26. He reminds us that today we are the ones responsible for carrying awareness to those who are searching. The expansion of this medicine is already underway, and now, more than ever, we all need to connect with her. But that connection comes with a warning: medicine is not something to be used however we please. It is not to be appropriated, sold as a pharmacy product, or patented as though it were merchandise. Because just as medicine carries the strength to heal, without the right knowledge and respect to bring her to people responsibly, she can just as easily bring the opposite: harm instead of healing. Rasu’s words are a call to protect the integrity of medicine, so that its expansion into the world never comes at the cost of its truth. by @amanda.gois__
“Cultural Survival in Sound: The Yawanawa Language Revival” Mandala Talk Stage Projeto Terra do Sol & Yawanawa Entourage This year we had the opportunity to invite the Yawanawa people to share a living testimony of the impact that music brought to the rescue of the Yawanawa language. “Nuke Tsai” - a title to the Yawanawa language - was forbidden and almost completely lost Due to this, very little percentage of the population speaks fluently the native language Nevertheless this ancestral technology has found its waves through music vibrating long distances (all the way here) through the indigenous voices that so deeply touch’s our hearts Once again we brought emphasis to the “Indigenous Languages Decade” proclaimed by UNESCO as being this moment we are living (2022-2032) Rasú Yawanawa shared during this talk the story of a profecy his grandfather (legendary Pajé Tatá) received in a vision The seed of Kairau A seed that there people would plant all through the world…through music! It was a pleasure and a privilege to co-create this panel, thank you @icaros.festival , @amanda.gois__ @rasuyawa @yawanawaerika @matsa_hushahu_yawanawa______ @sarabroring For those that want to hear more about this profecy Rasú shares more in his profile @rasuyawa Long Live the Native Languages 🙌🏽 📸 @grazkii @malokavoadora by @amanda.gois__

“We are not just guardians, we are multipliers” - Julia Yawanawá Our mothers, grandmothers, and ancestors were not simply growing food. They were cultivating continuity. Every seed saved was a rememberance, and every seed shared was an act of generosity. And now, we become part of that lineage. We are not the owners of these seeds. We are their multipliers. We take what was entrusted to us, help it grow, and pass it forward, hopefully with more diversity, more abundance, and more life than we received. Seeds tell us that our role is not to possess life, but to participate in its continuation. The work of our mothers lives in the soil, in the harvest, and in every seed we choose to carry forward. What we inherit, we have the opportunity to multiply.
