Opening tonight! Amedeo Polazzo’s solo exhibition ‘Die Strudlhofstiege’ previews between 6–8pm this evening at #HeraldStMuseumSt.

Encompassing the gallery, a specially conceived mural cradles a suite of paintings which float in and around it, the fresco secco and canvases in gentle dialogue. Polazzo’s work embodies layers, palpable physically, narratively, and temporally. The tableaux and their painted support capture moments of intimate personal history, whimsical imaginings, and generic stock imagery, softly connected by subtle links which spark an undercurrent language.

The Hovering Life

June 4 - July 20, 2024
@belami.la

I had a wonderful time in LA and I want to thank @leerachelfoley for making this show possible and writing so profoundly about the work ” ..Idyllic but anonymous, unknown or forgotten, outside of time, Polazzo’s imagery allows for
gaps, unraveling the impulse to construe a narrative from fragmented memory. These works capture a yearning to hold onto the fragile details of an evocative moment, while at the same time acknowledging inevitable loss.”

Also a special thank you to @thesaddestflex @naokisutter @yiwen.artsculture who supported me in this special journey. by @herald_st

Il Richiamo ( The calling ), Oil on Canvas, 117x90 cm

“ In Il Richiamo (2026), the same storm strikes an intimate pair of fruits . A pear and an apple cling to one another in an attempt to save themselves, waves crash inexorably over a small plum that prepares to be engulfed by it. By renewing and combining the conventions of still life and seascape painting with an irony tinged with bitterness, Polazzo depicts vanitas for the contemporary world, interior landscapes that offer no comfort.” @marta_papini @herald_st by @herald_st

Amedeo Polazzo’s diptych ‘Aging’ (2026) is included in ‘Of Minor Importance’, the group exhibition currently on view at the gallery until Saturday 15 August.

Throughout Polazzo’s still lifes, themes of reflection, aging, and the mutable nature of identity are approached with irony. The depicted objects seem to acquire an almost human presence, transforming lived experience into images that are at once playful and quietly unsettling.

“Sleeper I” and “Sleeper II” @herald_st in Bologna
Oil on Wood, both 30 x 15cm

“ All of them convey the sensation that the gaze cannot penetrate a secret hidden beneath the surface of the painting. Taurusgate, Nesting Model, Sleeper I, and Sleeper II (all 2026) deceive the viewer’s eye with precise painting and hyper-realistic details, leaving behind the unsettling feeling of a well-kept secret.” @marta_papini

“..new visual languages—bridging psychological phenomena and surreal imagery— construct a visual alphabet defined by the unexpected, by deviations, and by anomalies that subvert the anticipated outcome. As if harboring a well-kept, unfathomable secret, Polazzo’s painting becomes hyper-realistic and illusory, rendered with such precision that it deceives the eye. This is evident in works such as *Nesting Model* and *Sleeper I*, which leave the viewer grasping for a truth hidden beneath the painted surface. “ @artnews_italia

“ So the threshold is not where the matter ends. Polazzo’s surfaces do not delay passage from one side to another in the classical way. They bring the body up to the point of ordinary use and stop it precisely there, at the seam where recognition would have turned into doing.“ @quietmodernism by @herald_st

Herald St is delighted to announce representation of #AmedeoPolazzo

Amedeo Polazzo (b.1988, Starnberg, Germany) lives and works in London. Polazzo creates works on canvas, murals using the fresco secco technique, and functional, hand-painted lamp sculptures that draw on a wide range of visual references, from Italian Renaissance painting, trompe l'œil illusionism, and Surrealism, to popular culture, literature, and everyday observation. Abstracting elements of personal biography into broader allegories, his works suggest psychological states, or encounters that remain deliberately unresolved.

Across each medium, the motifs Polazzo paints resemble objects glimpsed in a dream, or fragments of some half-forgotten memory. Humming with latent meaning, but refusing to offer up a linear narrative, these images invite reflection on our seemingly ever-forward journey through time. Polazzo arrives at his finished canvases through a process of gradually building up and erasing layers of pigment, tempera, and oil, suggesting that what is lost during the making of a work is as significant as what ultimately remains.

Writing on Polazzo’s current solo exhibition, Commedia dell’arte, at Herald St | Bologna, the editors of ARTnews Italia (@artnews_italia) observed: 'The inexorability of time and the ephemeral nature of existence are central themes in Polazzo’s work... Polazzo's still lifes possess a life of their own; they represent psychological states and become characters in stories that are not ours. The artist turns into a director, constructing strange, at times unsettling narrative structures. Like masks in the manner of James Ensor, Polazzo’s artistic operations contain a bitterly ironic streak that naturally gives way to unease.’

Very excited to show “Selfportrait as Carrot”
( 184 x 12cm, Oil on Wood ) as part of “Of Minor importance” opening @_aliceamati on the 15th of July.

“ Bringing together works of modern masters alongside contemporary painters, the exhibition traces a lineage of attention to the so-called “minor.” In these artists’ hands, what once were considered modest subjects – such as fruits, flower, common tableware and everyday objects etc– are used to address the urgencies of the present and our place in this everchanging world.”

Participating artists:

Helene Appel
Silas Borsos
Fernando Botero
George Braque
Giorgio De Chirico
Sebastián Espejo
Danielle Fretwell
Johnny Izzat-Lowry
Scott Kahn
Giorgio Morandi
Amedeo Polazzo

“Succession” on view @herald_st Bologna
Oil on Wood, 2026

“..while at first glance these works resemble still lifes, some such as, Succession, (2026), can be uncovered as portraits of a family. A small yellow apple in the foreground stands before two ancestors, a slightly larger green apple and a red one in the background, which appears gigantic compared to the first two. The formation recalls the structure of Victorian staged family photographs. Like a matryoshka doll, the largest apple contains the smaller ones, introducing another key theme for interpreting Polazzo’s works: the inexorability of time and the ephemeral nature of existence..”
