Join me for a free yoga class in honor of International Yoga Day on Sunday June 21st at the Hindu Temple of Rochester at 6pm.

I teach non-colonized yoga, in the tradition of Iyengar Yoga, a traditional and also progressive method of yoga straight from India. The subject of yoga is vast and the method of Iyengar Yoga is a deep dive into what is health, who are we, what are we made for on this earth, how do we relate within the Universe around us, what is skillful action as a explained in the Bhagavad Gita, what is the path of yoga? Calling all seekers who wish to attune into themselves.

“The yogi fears none and none need fear him, because he is purified by the study of the Self.”

“There are two types of anger, one which debases the mind while the other leads to spiritual growth. The root of the first is pride, which makes one angry when slighted. This prevents the mind from seeing things in perspective and makes one judgement defective. The yogi, on the other hand, is angry with (themselves) when (their) mind stoops low or when all his learning and experience fail to stop him from folly.”

“Gentleness of mind is an attribute of a yogi, whose heart melts at all suffering. In him gentleness for others and firmness for himself go hand in hand, and in his presence all hostilities are given up.”

With all that is going on in the world today, I hope we can all work on ourselves and cultivate ahimsā with abhaya and akrodha. 🙏🏽

Have we ever thought of āsanas as blessings? Most of the time we either like an āsan or we don’t like it. We do with zeal or we do with trepidation. This concept that each āsana is like the varada hasta/mudra or hand gesture of deities showing blessings and boons to devotees makes one to question the power of an āsana when every part of the body and being fits into it’s respective place.
In the same way that many pieces of a puzzle create the whole picture. If we can think of āsanas as blessings waiting to grant us their boons, should we choose to study ourselves in them, radically transforms modern concepts of ‘yoga poses’. And brings them back to their origins in the spiritual plane.
