A collection of ghosts, a voyeuristic series of trashed and mysterious fabric drape appreciation from 2019

#trashedfabric #curtains #voyeur #otherpeopleshomes by @amoelbarroco

I am secretly jealous of the animals that pass away by natural causes in the woods because, as a human, I know that when my time comes, it’s not going to happen like that. The bodies of these animals will decompose slowly and peacefully over the soil and the plants, recreating a soft ancient alchemy of giving back. And that is so beautiful.

Forever grateful to @victor.rees.5 and @damo_walsh for including my series “Soap” (2013) in this incredible publication, Decomposition - an anthology of words and images. It’s so exciting to be in the same book as other writers and artists you admire 🙏

🪱🪱🪱

“The termite and the silverfish are lying in wait, lurking in the cracks around your bookshelf, in the gaps between your laptop keys . . .”

Messages are interpreted in piles of ashes and the grain of unearthed cassette tapes. Insects become librarians in palaces made of dead skin, then transform into invertebrate angels. Manic chains of correspondence connect ideas of physical decay to entropies of language and thought.

Decomposition is a gathering of work from voices both established and emerging. Contributors include Iain Sinclair, Andrew Kötting, Tessa Farmer, Eleanor Crook, Eric Langley, Stephen Watts, Gareth Evans, Sophie Herxheimer, Stephen Emmerson, Chiara Ambrosio and Timothy J. Jarvis.

Decomposition is the first book in the New School of the Anthropocene’s @nsotanthropocene in/kiostro imprint. Visit their webpage to grab a copy! by @amoelbarroco

In the last years I’ve been working in long term projects that entertain facing ghosts and loss, I see them as part of a shadow work process. Textiles, words, brut embroidery + other raw or found materials are my ritual elements for inner and outer transformation. The results are usually relics from the act itself.

Sharing a little inspirational carousel showing embroidery and sewing art/works as rituals of grief, trauma processing or even channelled/mediumistic art, which I find fascinating.

First slide shows a composition with hair and text as sentimental memory. Mid XXth century I think!

One of my favourite pieces ever.

Embroidered jacket with autobiographical text by Agnes Richter (1844–1918) who was a German seamstress. She made this piece while being held in Heidelberg psychiatric hospital against her will.

Two details of embroideries attributed to the household of Mary Queen of the Scots and Mary herself produced during her long arrest by order of her cousin Elizabeth I, who finally got her beheaded.

The snake one is part of The Cavendish hanging by Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury during 1570-85. These pieces are currently exhibited at Oxburgh Hall, although the monkey I couldn’t find, but I love it so much.

“They were made using counted-thread embroidery (a technique in which a set number of stitches are decided on before the embroider begins work), with stitches worked over the threads of a coarsely woven linen canvas, using coloured silks and gold, silver and silver-gilt thread.”

The motifs depicted were sometimes used as metaphors about injustice and abuse of power.

There are some displayed at the V&A museum, they’re so stunning.

Josefa Tolrà’s trance channelled embroidery.

“A textile worker from Cabrils, a small town on the Maresme province (Catalonia), Josefa Tolrà’s life was marked by the death of her two sons. Overcome by grief, she began to connect wit by @amoelbarroco

Welcome to the making of DUVET or the tapestry of my castle of the unwanted, the abandoned, the neglected, the destroyed.

10ish hours divided in three sessions compressed in 1.20 min of embroidering this hell of a material given to me by a wolf-man that felt as if I was embroidering on spider webs 🕸️🪡

The embroidered text reads Quiero cuidar de ti (I want to take care of you in Spanish). Something you might have been told at some point in your life. I love how bad it looks. Stitches like scars.

This piece is part of a wider project and its final piece. “Alchemised” has taken me years to complete, but it accomplished its mission of alchemising emotional suffering into acceptance and wisdom through the transformative act of using thread and needle with intention. There are more pieces, some of them have already been shared, others probably will never be shown on social media.

Enjoying so so much my long term residency at @futureritual @studio.futureritual 🙏 super grateful to them for allowing me to be part of this creative community and space. Can’t wait to start working in my next project in this gorgeous studio.

Next project is about generational trauma and one of our biggest problems now and then: f*scism. There will be performance.

For the curious: all my clothing is second hand, I just sometimes buy merch from projects and bands I want to support. I was wearing tees of: @maudthemoth amazing music for yer ears and @industriasmda, anarchy for your soul from Barcelona ✊, and a second hand sailory one 🐚.

Always around my neck a traditional jet Galician figa and the Monas Hieroglyphica pendant by @underthepyramids

Also thanks to everybody watching that football match for cheering me when I finished my second session at the studio.

It’s taking years to give closure to Alchemised project, but trusting the process on this, as they say.

Two overlapped self portraits mixing and melting, folding 25 years in an intimate dialog about time and experience.

🩸Vulnerable/durable as an inspiring concept match.

Hope you all are having a great start of this new cycle and Spring in the Northern hemisphere! 🙏🌺

Never got to share this one from 3 Springs ago. How it all re-started. The first piece that was embroidered when re-opening amoelbarroco after a decade of pause.

Transformed a wide brim witchy hat into a kind of “incroyable/merveilleuse” post-French revolution bicorne. Also, embroidered over it this scarlet letter in an esoteric framing.

What led a lot of us into subcultures in the last decades of the XXth century, was owning a feeling of not belonging.

Not belonging to our schools, the dominating religion, our families, the society we grew up in…not fitting the expectations over us. Being marked with a sign of non conformity. And that is political, even if a lot of us weren’t aware of it when we when younger.

Even if it felt superficial, it wasn’t. It should have always been a gesture of not agreeing with what it’s stablished.

Maybe putting distance between those spaces and us took more or less time, but I hope a lot of us who didn’t belong, ended up doing it and finding our communities.

We aren’t perfect, but every step we take not to repeat what harmed us is powerful.

Being/looking “alt”, as they call it nowadays, should represent specific politics, those who align with the less favoured in this world opposing the powerful and rich who abuse whoever they want, basically.

Yeh, everyone is free to dress as they want, but if you think being conservative and subcultural makes any sense you’re living in a costume with no party to go to.

Note: it’s quite hard to embroider metallic thread into hard felt.

This was such a fulfilling experience 🙏❤️ so grateful to @rosemaryjanecronin who hosted a tarot-inspired life drawing session last Friday at @vamuseum and asked me to be the stylist and model for it.

These looks are inspired by three Major Arcana: The Empress, The Sun and The Moon 🌺🌞🌝

Having the job of playing the statue in such a museum and helping people in their creative practice was a dream coming true.

Thanks @exquis for being there and capturing these souvenirs of the night!

Inspirational collage/mood board for the three stylings based on tarot’s Major Arcana The Sun/The Moon/The Empress I created for the live drawing session that @rosemaryjanecronin hosted last Friday at @vamuseum 🌞 within their “Make&Meet” festival.

It was such a pleasure to work with Rosemary as model and stylist for this event 🙏 and in such an incredible environment.

Pics of the looks very soon!

The collage includes images of the mentioned tarot cards from the Rider-Waite Smith deck, alchemical Suns, 20s costumes, paintings by Remedios Varó, Twiggy dressed in 70s Biba, a painting by Boticelli and Leonor Fini being fabulous + a couple of her paintings.

Essentially, it’s always stories and pieces about the unwanted, residual or forgotten around here. And the alchemy or transformative potential in them 🩸to be integrated, wanted, loved, to become something greater.
