AMONG THE SUPPORTERS: COMMUNITY/CULTURA

During San Diego FC’s inaugural season in 2025, I spent time inside Snapdragon Stadium documenting the fans and the culture building around the club.

Rather than focusing on the action on the pitch, I turned my attention to the supporters. Walking the stadium during matches, I photographed the chants, the drums, the flags, the celebrations, and the moments that brought people together. I was especially drawn to La Frontera and the energy they brought to the stands.

These images tell a story beyond the game itself. They’re about the people, the community, and the cultura that make San Diego FC what it is.

Among the Supporters: Community/Cultura brings together these moments from the club’s inaugural season, documenting a community finding its voice and creating its own identity.

The book is now available.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed me and allowed me to document this part of San Diego FC’s story.

Among The Supporters — the portrait book is out!

During SDFC’s inaugural season, I had an idea: walk around the parking lot before each match and photograph the fans, the community, and the cultura that make San Diego Football Club what it is.

The result is 151 portraits of the people I met along the way.

It was pretty special getting to meet so many different people, hear a little of their stories, and have them step in front of my camera. I’m grateful to everyone who took the time to be part of this project.

Among The Supporters is now available for purchase.

Photographer Spotlight Series

Highlighting some of the photographers covering San Diego FC and their fans. Post 4 of ?

@amongthesupporters has been exactly that. He can be spotted roaming the tailgates prematch and then among the fans in the stands during. He documents the experience with portraits and actions shots. Give him a follow!

I’m Israel Castillo, born and raised in San Diego. When it was announced that our city was getting an MLS club, I knew I wanted to be out there documenting some part of it. What started with photographing fans tailgating outside the stadium eventually led to a media credential and the opportunity to focus on the community and culture that make San Diego FC special. On match days, you’ll usually find me making my way around the stadium, documenting supporters and the energy that spreads throughout the stands, especially in La Frontera.

I’m also the photographer behind Portraits on Kettner, an ongoing portrait project now in its seventh year with more than 400 participants. I’d love to continue expanding the series with more fans, supporter groups, and players. If you see me at a match, come say hi. by @amongthesupporters
