Not every idea needs to follow a familiar path. Some of our most interesting explorations begin with a question, an experiment or simply the urge to try something different.

We believe in giving ideas room to grow, materials room to surprise us and the creative process room to take its own course.

Design rarely follows a straight line. It evolves through questions, experiments, material and instinct. And somewhere along the way, it becomes something we didn’t quite imagine.

With over two decades of experience across India and the UK, Kanika Mahadevwala, Principal Architect and Co-founder of andblack design studio, brings a wealth of expertise across architecture and sustainable design. With a portfolio of over 50 projects, her multidisciplinary practice reflects a thoughtful approach to design, alongside her leadership in business development and strategic growth.

Her spotlight presentation offered the CC Ahmedabad community a closer look at the thinking, experience and entrepreneurial journey behind her work. These exchanges are what make Corporate Connections valuable; a space where members gain fresh perspectives from one another, share their own expertise and build relationships that extend beyond the meeting room.

Another interaction adding to the collective knowledge and strength of the community.

For Ahmedabad-based andblack design studio (@andblackdesignstudio), architecture is an evolving process shaped by experimentation, material exploration and the willingness to question convention. Founded by architects Jwalant Mahadevwala and Kanika Agarwal, the practice moves across architecture, interiors, furniture, installations and objects, allowing ideas to travel from one scale to another.

Known for its work in parametric and computational design, the studio brings together Jwalant’s interest in geometry, systems and generative processes with Kanika’s understanding of proportion, restraint and how spaces are used. Rather than committing to a fixed aesthetic, the duo responds to each project through its context, materials, technology and purpose.

From hands-on prototyping that reveals unexpected material behaviours to exploring the possibilities of bamboo and digital fabrication, experimentation remains central to their process. Yet, as they explain, creative risk must always be balanced with responsibility, practicality and functionality. Their project Darwin Bucky reflects this approach, challenging conventional architectural assumptions and testing every decision against what the project truly needs.

Worked against the grain, for those with an eye for the uncommon.

At andblack, every form begins with a process of exploration, where material, intuition and intelligent systems come together to shape distinctive design.

An appreciation for the details, the unexpected, and the possibilities that lie beyond the ordinary.

Introducing andblack: A curation of the uncommon.

An evolving repertoire of collectible objects, brought together through a discerning eye for form, material and craftsmanship.

This is where we begin, with the pieces that have shaped our archive.
More objects, more stories, and the hands behind them, soon.

Before Dholki becomes a space, it begins as a thought.

Here’s Jwalant @andblackdesignstudio taking us through the thought behind the space, the details, and how they’re slowly coming together to become Dholki.

The making of Dholki, through the eyes of its designer.

📅 11th–19th October 2026
📍 Dholki Garba, Sardar Patel Ring Rd, Ognaj–Bhadaj, Ahmedabad

The Dip Pavilion by andblack design studio in Ahmedabad creates a restrained connection between architecture, garden and pool, unified by a sculptural roof and transparent volume.

A concrete roof lined with wood on its underside forms a continuous ceiling, bringing warmth and depth to the pavilion. Visible from key vantage points within the residence, it becomes the marker that anchors the pavilion together.

Combined with stone flooring, steel and full-height glazing, the timber lining softens the structure while maintaining visual continuity between the interior and surrounding landscape.

Design Democracy 2026.
And the launch of HARKAT.
Coming together of @studiomotionworks and @andblackdesignstudio

#design #kineticart #parametricdesign #designdemocracy #indianart

@designdemocracy.in by @andblackdesignstudio

We’re delighted to introduce HARKAT, a new collection born from the coming together of @andblackdesignstudio and @studiomotionworks

Rooted in a shared passion for material, movement and experimentation, Harkat explores what can emerge when two distinct design practices meet through friendship, curiosity and a common love for making.

The resulting works are sculptural, kinetic and deeply expressive — where precision meets play, engineering meets emotion, and kinetics meets parametrics.

A collection shaped by two studios, one friendship, and a lot of harkat.

Here is the first glimpse for you.
