2 weeks ago I toed the line @highlonesome100 . 56 miles later, my race ended at Lost Wonder Hut instead of the finish line. I wasn’t sure about sharing much on this experience, but I think it’s important to share the good and the bad.
The first 30 miles of the race were wonderful. I stood on the start line with @ham_donut and @kodisfrost with giddy excitement. Getting to just *run* and leave behind the anticipation that was making me so anxious was everything. I was in awe of how many strong women were around me (a 50% gender split is a thing of beauty).
After Cottonwood AS, things started to turn. I puked for the first time a mile outside of the AS, and didn’t stop puking for the remainder of my race. Then, my left knee blew up and I was no longer able to run the downhills. I have never once lost my ability to run downhill, so this was a tough thing to accept and work with. I could still jog the flats or low grade descents, but if you’re at all familiar with HiLo you know those are mostly nonexistent. I shuffled into Hancock at mile 49 excited to see my crew and pick up @monicalynnlee and still hopeful I could somehow turn things around. Unfortunately, during those miles from Hancock to Lost Wonder the wheels fell off entirely. My knee was all sorts of jacked up, in ways I hadn’t felt before that made me nervous— and I couldn’t move at an efficient pace on any grade. I was puking and dry heaving constantly. By the time we got to Lost Wonder, I had 7 or 8 minutes until the cutoff. I considered death marching on, but with the fear of injuring my knee further, and the unlikelihood of things turning around enough to make the next cutoff, I called it. There’s still a not insignificant part of me that wishes I had just kept pushing, but in hindsight I feel mostly confident I made the right call.
I’ve spent the past two weeks processing so many different emotions and feelings— sadness, disappointment, shame, inadequacy, frustration. I’m working on getting to the point of feeling proud of the effort and miles I did put in. It’s shockingly difficult to feel proud of 56 miles when it was supposed to be 100.

or something like that by @andrea_nye

This one was special. And I miss it. All of it.

The months leading up to the @cocodona250 were spent logging huge miles, obsessing over details, and making backup plans for our backup plans. Somewhere along the way, my goal shifted. I didn’t just want to finish. I wanted to do this differently. I wanted to learn from the mistakes I’ve made over this distance before. To stay calm when things inevitably got hard. To really see the desert instead of just surviving my way through it. To laugh more. To let myself enjoy it. To share something meaningful with my people.

All of that happened.

For the first time in a race this long, my body felt cared for instead of fought against. My feet felt better than they have in most 50 milers (huge shoutout to @trail_toes + @injinji). I ran more than I ever have deep into a long race. I ate real food. I smiled. A lot. Even in the hard moments, there was this underlying feeling of gratitude that never left.

But the most meaningful part of this race was my crew.

They adopted this dream as if it were their own and carried it with me every step of the way. They waited through long cold nights and endless desert hours. They drove hundreds of miles, hauled gear from aid station to aid station, paced me through literal and figurative dark stretches, problem solved when things got messy, ignored things that deserved ignoring (I def tried to pull some shit) and greeted me every single time with energy, care, and so much belief.

There’s something deeply moving about feeling completely defeated, exhausted, and empty then seeing people light up when they see you. I will never fully be able to explain what it means to be cared for like that. To be held up by people who ask for nothing in return except the opportunity to help you keep moving forward.

This race belonged to all of us. And it was absolutely perfect. by @andrea_nye

I don’t really have words for this place other than New Zealand changed my brain chemistry a lil bit. Anyway, here’s a small smattering of the magic of the South Island. by @andrea_nye

If I had to choose one word for the month of August, it would be joy. Just a whole lotta joy 🥹 by @andrea_nye

If we’re gonna go, better go together

So many words I could say about these beautiful humans, but it wouldn’t even come close to covering it. Lucky, grateful, and so much love 🫶🏼
