Dave Holland turned 80 — and I get to talk about him on swiss national radio tonight. Roman Hošek invited me to SRF 2 Kultur’s Jazz Collection to talk about one of my biggest influences as a bass player, and I had the honour of choosing the playlist — from «Conference of the Birds», his work as a sideman, up to his legendary quintet albums such as «Prime Directive» and the Dave Holland Big Band «What Goes Around». Dave’s playing has been a constant for me: energetic, complex and natural – a rock in the surf. Thank you, Roman, for the invitation and the inspiring conversation! Tune in tonight at 20:00 on Radio SRF 2 Kultur, or listen back anytime here: https://www.srf.ch/audio/jazz-collection/dave-holland-der-kontrabass-fels-in-der-brandung?id=AUDI20261027_NR_0003 #daveholland #jazzcollection #srf2kultur #primedirective #radiobroadcast by @andreaswaelti

Congratulations – three UNIT artists have been honoured at this year’s Austrian Jazz Prize! Georg Vogel takes second place in the Best Album category with his thrilling solo piano record «Ogilsd Vobi», and Purple is the Color comes third with their distinctive band sound on «Unbemanntes Raumschiff», while TSOMBANIS4 finishes third in the Best Live Act category. To be recognised among 175 submissions, by an academy of more than 200 experts and an international jury of five, is no small thing. We’re proud of these results – but awards like these belong to the musicians, to their vision and their dedication. We feel fortunate and honoured to accompany them along the way. Congratulations to all the winners – Peter Rom, Mel*E, Lorenz Widauer and Michael Mantler – and to Elena Schäfer, Avin Ahmadi and Jazzorchester Vorarlberg for their placings. And a big congratulations to all 34 nominees. The breadth of this year’s shortlist speaks for itself. Austrian jazz is alive and we’re proud to be part of it! www.jazzpreis.at www.georgvogel.net www.purpleisthecolor.com www.unitrecords.com/artists/tsombanis4 #georgvogel #purpleisthecolor #tsombanis4 #österreichischerjazzpreis #unitrecords by @andreaswaelti

AZOLIA release their album «Begegnung mit Rilke» today on Unit Records. Following their acclaimed programme inspired by British poet Wilfred Owen, the quartet now turns to Rainer Maria Rilke, marking the centenary of his death with a new collection of delicate, atmospheric and deeply expressive compositions. Through an intimate interplay of voice, reeds and bass, AZOLIA opens a space for longing, doubt and hope, allowing Rilke’s timeless poetry to resonate in unexpected ways. A first single from AZOLIA’s upcoming album «Begegnung mit Rilke» is out today. Marking the centenary of Rilke’s death in 2026, the international quartet sets his poems in chamber-like arrangements that feel airy, intimate and deeply considered. After their acclaimed programme on the poetry of Wilfred Owen, AZOLIA turn to Rilke and make his language newly audible – fragile, luminous, full of resonance. Voice, reeds and bass weave around one another, leaving room for the words to breathe. The full album will be out October 9 2026 and can already be preordered from today on. If you prefer to get your copy directly from the artists, AZOLIA will begin their fall release tour this Weekend in Dortmund and Darmstadt. PREVITE/RUCKER/WAELTI ON AIR TODAY // Ö1 RADIOSESSION To celebrate the 75th birthday of Bobby Previte, the Austrian national radio brought together the legendary US drummer with, Austrian saxophonist Fabian Rucker and Swiss double bassist Andreas Waelti for a first-ever musical encounter. With Rucker serving as the link between the three, the trio explores an entirely improvised set where everything is reduced to its essentials: sound, time and listening. No fixed forms. No predetermined material. Just music unfolding in the moment. In the first part of the new broadcasting format, Bobby Previte presents a selection of favourite recordings from across his extensive discography, including his last record “Second Arrow“ (Unit Records). Thanks to Ö1 and Klaus Wienerroither for the invitation! In November 2024, I had the pleasure of recording an album with my Tunisian friend Malek Lakhoua, who is a true force of nature – not only behind the drums. Malek is the founder of Tunisia’s first jazz record label, “Jazzit Records” and initiated a international music festival in Tunis under the same name, through which – despite numerous challenges – he supports young artists, musicians and initiatives, with the aim of bringing people and cultures together and fostering unity regardless of boarders. The second edition will take place the upcoming week at Mad‘art Carthage and IFT Sousse. Alongside these activities he produces exceptional olive oil on his families farm, is a beautiful humble human being and always a pleasure to chat and hang out with – which unfortunately makes my nights always slightly shorter than needed… Malek brought this project together with with the American musician Kyle Schafer, who has explored and rearranged Tunisian melodies and songs through the lens of his US West Coast background. This research lead to “Tunisian Vibes“, where my Italian-Belgian friend, educator and saxophonist Pietro Vaiana and myself are featured. The album is now out on all streaming platforms and physical copies will follow soon, thanks to the support of Igloo and Jazzit Records. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! We had the chance to perform my piece CLAZZ at the Lviv Philharmonic in Ukraine. These past days have touched me deeply. So much intensity, so much tension — and at the same time, such strength. Even in the middle of uncertainty, people come together, listen, create, and share something profoundly human. Moments like these stay with you. A very special thank you to Tamara Lukasheva (@tamaralukasheva) — not only for her amazing performance of ANIMA, but also for the original idea behind this double performance and for making it happen. And to Iolanta Pryshliak (@iolanta_inso), director of the Lviv Philharmonic (@lvivphiharmonic), for her openness, trust, and vision. And to Oksana Kulyk (@oksanakulykharpist) for her constant care, support, and for looking after us throughout this time. My deepest gratitude to all the wonderful musicians — my quintet ROOFER featuring Luise Volkmann (@luisevolkmann_), Nataliya Lebedeva, Andreas Waelti (@andreaswaelti), Dario Sisera, Michael Stulz, and the INSO Lviv (@insolviv.orchestra) — and to the great conductor Roman Kreslenko (@kreslenko) for his inspiring leadership! Making music together under these circumstances is something I will never forget. None of this would have been possible without the support of Kulturförderung Graubünden, Fondation SUISA (@fondation.suisa), Stiftung Dr. Valentin Malamoud, Stiftung Schweizerischer Musikerverband and the SIS - Schweizerische Interpretenstiftung. Your trust made this encounter possible — thank you. What happened in Lviv today fills us with deep sadness. You are not alone — we stand with you and send you strength! ❤️ MUCH LOVE, PEACE AND MUSIC. by @andreaswaelti
