Foundation pour documenting shoot early this morning in Imperial Beach. The @allgiregeneralcontractors site super suggested this spot for a quick selfie. Bob is so helpful. I’m back on my stereo photo bullshit, so I broke out the hard-to-find Loreo split-beam 3D lens for a few shots I’ll print later. DJI Ronin 3 Mini is very helpful when gathering handheld video. You can’t ask for a better landing spot than concrete test slabs onsite. #allgiregeneralcontractors #andymcroryphoto #canonusa #djiusa #stereophotography by @andymcroryphoto
If you fly a drone under Part 107 (commercial) in the U.S. you know this app (Air Control… formerly Aloft). It’s where you go to request airspace approval from the FAA. See that red line at the bottom, on the U.S. side of the border with Mexico? That’s brand new. It’s a new 1-nautical mile wide “no-fly zone” for drones, from Oct 19, 2026 through Oct 19, 2027. There’s a draconian new NOTAM/TFR in effect that essentially says no drones allowed (there are exceptions granted by the Customs and Border Protection agency) from the ocean east to the Gulf Coast of Texas. They even mention “deadly force.” I wrote about it and the way it will affect my business. As bad as it is here, I can’t imagine how it will be for drone operators in a border city like El Paso, where even UTEP falls within this exclusion zone. Will this new TFR affect you? Cleaning out my camera cabinet and remembered I have this fantastic 1950s 135mm f/4 Zeiss Sonnar “Alu” sitting around (made in/aus Jena). Need to get a M42-to-Canon R adapter so I can use it again. What prompted this? San Diego has been going through an “undergrounding” process for probably a decade, moving ugly power and comms lines underground neighborhood by neighborhood. My MIL had her street done at least 10 years ago (Serra Mesa/Mission Village), and it’s amazing to see houses without ugly utility poles. In the last 2 weeks, we (North Park) have had new, *hideous*, metal poles installed because SDGE has paused the undergrounding schedule. I can’t imagine what this costs or why it makes more sense to spend the money on sticking 100 giant new metal poles in the ground. #carlzeiss #vintagelenses #sandiegophotographer #andymcroryphoto #blackandwhitephotography by @andymcroryphoto
San Diego history nerds! Years ago, I photographed a house in North Park for a Landscape Architect client. I shot it, but at the time I didn’t really know what I was looking at. This house was built in 1915 by David Owen Dryden, a self-taught builder who put up more than 50 houses around San Diego between 1911 and 1919. This 28th Street home was probably his least subtle design of all of them. Link to my blog post in my bio. #sandiegohistory #davidowendryden #wwi #craftsmanstyle #andymcroryphoto by @andymcroryphoto
New blog post! Had a shoot last week for a new client - a brand new sports complex in South Bay. I had every box checked. LAANC approval. A hired visual observer in hi-vis standing next to me. Flight paths built around FAA rules for flying over people. District permission on file. A shot list from the client. Mid-shoot, during a packed opening home game, a voice came over the PA: “The person flying the drone needs to land immediately, or the home team will have to forfeit the game.” That person was me. Did some say tasty Tuesday? Pringle here for your daily thirst trap photo 😘 by @andymcroryphoto
On the bay last night for a sunset sail with friends. No whales or sharks showed up, but we did see lots of Coast Guard craft, a C-17 Globemaster landing at North Island, and some noisy sea lions. #canonR8 #andymcroryphotography #harborislandyachtclub #sailingtakesmeaway⛵️ #sandiegobay by @andymcroryphoto
A new site, and the reason for it. I went to a Digital Nomads Parallel retreat in Greece this spring expecting to talk about work-life balance with my long-time friend and client @digitalnomadlife56 . Instead I ended up in a gorgeous villa on Paros with a group of seasoned business pros who, after hearing me describe what I actually do, told me flat out: Andy, you’re underselling this. The expanded drone work, the construction progress photography, the interview video services. All of it. That stuck. I came home and looked at my own website with fresh eyes. Turns out it wasn’t showing the work at the level the work deserved. So I rebuilt it. New site’s live - link in bio The Fall part of my calendar has got some room in it. If we haven’t worked together in a while (or ever!), I’d love for us to grab coffee and hear what you’re building. #sandiegophotography #architecturephotographer #andymcroryphoto #opentowork #letscollaborate by @andymcroryphoto
10 years ago I got the opportunity to watch the All Star Game at Petco Park from a client’s roof (thank you, Cruzan). Brought a few lenses, including a rented 100-400/5.6. The last shot is the Hotel Del Coronado, which is about 4 miles away (straight line) from Petco. This is a great example of the way long telephoto lenses optically “flatten” perspective. #petcopark #allstargame #canonusa #andymcroryphoto by @andymcroryphoto
SDWC played their 2026 Pride concert this weekend at the Joan in Liberty Station, and asked me to play bass for them again! This is a snippet of “When I Rise Up,” a gospel-inflected song with words by 1920s Harlem Renaissance poet Georgia Douglas Johnson set to music by Zachary Moore. #sandiegobassist #sandiegowomenschorus #libertystation #georgiadouglasjohnson #andymcroryphoto by @andymcroryphoto
Stopped by Hansen Surf with the lad and grabbed a @brixton shirt for him. Saw this slop thing in the @darkseas section. C’mon, fellas - hire an artist. Look at those weird extra fins, the cliche “woodcut” lines that are straight outta prompton (yes I made that up). #aislop #hireanartist #hansenssurfshop #shirtdesigns by @andymcroryphoto
