Tonight’s mood. by @angel_luis_colon

Participating in society means practicing your civic duties and avoiding the clutches of complacency.

Your vote counts. If it didn’t, certain folks wouldn’t work so hard to invalidate it or convince you otherwise. While it certainly takes more work than just casting a vote, casting is still a part of the process. This is just step one.

Happy election day. by @angel_luis_colon

What a loss, but also what a career. It’s amazing to have had the privilege to see a performer play so many characters so effectively.

Picard, to me, might be one of the most fully realized characters in science fiction and Patrick Stewart is the only actor that could have pulled it off.

Last day of Latine Heritage Month means two things. 1) a month isn't enough to celebrate the writers, artists, activists, and heroes of our shared culture and 2) I'm gonna hype myself up if you don't mind.

My latest, POP! is out now.

I also have other work out there!

My MG novel, MINECRAFT: HOUSE OF HORRORS and my YA novel, INFESTED.

Latine writers, myself included, need your support. Nothing has improved for us in the industry - if anything, it's worsened. We're underrepresented, undervalued, and constantly at odds with the shape of a business that has no interest in what we're trying to say.

We're pit against each other for limited slots as 'chosen' tokens and in the event that we DO manage to leap every hurdle, we're left alone in the cold to market ourselves and punished for the sin of underselling. These issues also disproportionally affect Afro-Latine creatives as well, leaving a massive section of our cultures unspoken for.

Like I said, the practice of a month that simply allows the performative to posture to each other and companies to pay lip services to a back catalog they couldn't care less about isn't enough.

You want to see a difference, you need to meet us halfway. We're trying to be out here telling our stories, but YOU need to buy them.

Click the links in this thread. Read books outside of your comfort zone. Learn how rich our cultures and perspectives on OUR terms. We're not a circus attraction.

Thanks to the folks who have followed these posts. If you know me, you know I'll always boost Latine creatives doing the good work. This doesn't end here. by @angel_luis_colon

Hyping a modern classic today. Angie Cruz's DOMINICANA. by @angel_luis_colon

Since I shared non-fiction that emotionally wrecked me yesterday, I'm reminded of Wendy C. Ortiz's memoir, EXCAVATION.

You ever read a book that draws something from you so deep, it's as if you're going to choke on it as it emerges? Yeah, this book does that. by @angel_luis_colon

Good a day as any to post this. by @angel_luis_colon

Seems like an appropriate day to share the work of Nelson A Denis. WAR AGAINST ALL PUERTO RICANS is an incredible piece of non-fiction that will leave you breathless and maybe, like me, shaking with rage at the impact of modern American colonialism. by @angel_luis_colon

I can't do a list like this and NOT include Samanta Schweblin. Her writing is fucking sublime and I can't think of another novel that shook me the way FEVER DREAM did. by @angel_luis_colon

PR got recipes and Illyanna Maisonet’s DIASPORICAN is a wonderful exploration of old standards and of how recipes shift as we move to new places. by @angel_luis_colon

Latine writers can also tackle cozies! Raquel V Reyes’ Caribbean Kitchen series brings fresh perspective to a subgenre that rarely has diversity. by @angel_luis_colon

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve found a recently hatched monarch butterfly on the ground that I had to help find a safe place to dry out and fly, I’d have two nickels, but still - weird that it happened. by @angel_luis_colon
