What does "Shapeshifter" mean to Anna Ortiz? 𝓢𝓱𝓪𝓹𝓮𝓼𝓱𝓲𝓯𝓽𝓮𝓻 will present nine new large-scale oil paintings that construct immersive, mythic landscapes shaped by migration, memory, and Mesoamerican cosmologies. Ortiz's work carries a surrealist sensibility in its world-building, creating places slightly out of reach, without fixed borders, that feel only possible through paint. 𝓐𝓷𝓷𝓪 𝓞𝓻𝓽𝓲𝔃: 𝓢𝓱𝓪𝓹𝓮𝓼𝓱𝓲𝓯𝓽𝓮𝓻 opens September 9, on view through October 31. #AnnaOrtiz by @anna_ortizzzzz

This is the final week to see my solo show “Shapeshifter” @____chart____. ✨💫✨💫✨💫✨💫 This show has been an absolute dream come true. I am forever grateful to Clara and Iza for their dedication to the work and the ideas that shaped this show. Thank you to all of you who have made it. It has been such a privilege!!! Four days left! From the Press Release: Central to the exhibition is the figure of the jaguar, understood within Mesoamerican spiritual traditions as a nahual, or shapeshifting guide. Ortiz adopts the jaguar’s perspective as an elastic point of view: at once author, subject, and viewer. Through this framework, the paintings place the viewer within the space itself, where the landscape becomes something to migrate through rather than observe #soloshow #tribecaartgallery #newyorkart #paintingexhibition by @anna_ortizzzzz
Un Eclipse en Doble (2026) Oil on canvas 28 x 24 in In the foreground, the amaranth plant — a staple of the Aztec diet alongside corn, beans, and squash, and central to rituals including human sacrifice, where it was mixed with blood to form ceremonial figurines. When the Spanish arrived in Tenochtitlan, horrified by these rituals, they outlawed amaranth and burned its fields in an attempt to erase it. The Aztecs cultivated it in secret for generations, and it survived — making the amaranth, like many of the botanicals in this series, a symbol of isolation and resilience. The double eclipse above would have read as a prophetic sign to the migrating Mexica: a marker pointing the way toward their future homeland. #AnnaOrtiz #Shapeshifter by @anna_ortizzzzz
Ambulatorio (2026) Oil on canvas 80 x 60 in each panel The ambulatory is an architectural feature of a Catholic church — a path worshippers walk, pausing at each chapel to meditate before moving to the next, not unlike a moving meditation in yoga. Here, two jaguars move through rhythmic saguaros toward a body of water, their reflections punctuating its surface. Their movement mirrors the viewer’s own path through the gallery: each painting a place to pause and meditate, the gallery itself the ambulatory, the viewer the migrant. In the background stands La Malinche, the mountain named for Malintzín — the enslaved woman who became Cortés‘s translator, guide, and eventually his lover, bearing his children. Considered both the mother of the first mestizo and a traitor to her people, she remains, like so many women in history, at once reviled and revered. 𝓐𝓷𝓷𝓪 𝓞𝓻𝓽𝓲𝔃: 𝓢𝓱𝓪𝓹𝓮𝓼𝓱𝓲𝓯𝓽𝓮𝓻 closing October 31 #AnnaOrtiz #Shapeshifter by @anna_ortizzzzz
"Certain aspects of identity don’t disappear, aren’t assimilated or repressed when they are not in the foreground. Identity is a changing cluster of components and a shape-shifting activity. To refer to a person who is changing identity I use the Náhuatl term nagual… We shift around to do the work we have to do, to creative the identities we need to live up to our potential." — Gloria Anzaldúa, “The New Mestiza Nation”, 1992 This new body of work at 𝓢𝓱𝓪𝓹𝓮𝓼𝓱𝓲𝓯𝓽𝓮𝓻 extends the concerns of Anna Ortiz recent exhibition Nocturnos en Sayula, further developing her exploration of cyclical time and symbolic imagery. Recurring elements—volcanic landscapes, reflective bodies of water, indigenous plant life, ancient relics, and mythological figures—function as active agents within a world the artist builds through paint. Working within a restricted palette, Ortiz heightens the perceptual intensity of each scene through subtle shifts in value and temperature. Last two weeks to visit 𝓐𝓷𝓷𝓪 𝓞𝓻𝓽𝓲𝔃: 𝓢𝓱𝓪𝓹𝓮𝓼𝓱𝓲𝓯𝓽𝓮𝓻. #AnnaOrtiz #Shapeshifter by @anna_ortizzzzz
Jaguar Reflejado (2026) Oil on canvas 34 x 30 in As Grace Ebert writes for Colossal: In Mesoamerican folklore, the jaguar is a prominent nagual, a being with the power to morph into an animal. Moving from one realm into another allows this hybrid creature to act as a spiritual guide through unknown territories. For Anna Ortiz, the jaguar is also a fitting metaphor for entering into a mythic borderland. Anna Ortiz: “Shapeshifter” on view until October 31. #AnnaOrtiz #Shapeshifter by @anna_ortizzzzz
Floración, 2026 Oil on canvas 38 x 32 in A low-relief tablet carved with a desert moth sits foreground, surrounded by blooming cacti. Their relationship is symbiotic — the flowers exist to be pollinated by the moth — and abstracted here into a single image: two forms that depend on, and in some ways define, each other. #AnnaOrtiz #Shapeshifter by @anna_ortizzzzz
El Corredor (2026) Oil and flashe on canvas 60 x 60 inches This painting captures a rare celestial event. In the distance the sun approaches the horizon and splits into three; what is known as a sundog. This is the kind of event the Mexica would have searched for along their path towards Tenochtitlan. The nopales in the foreground are symbols of encouragement. They remind us of the prophecy of Huitzilopochtli, moving us forward and through the space. In a world where borders are increasingly hostile and militarized, this is a depiction of a borderland in a moment of wonder. The nopales are intense and guarded, but the space behind them is expansive and inviting. #AnnaOrtiz #Shapeshifter by @anna_ortizzzzz
