“If we opened people up, we’d find landscapes. If we opened me up, we’d find beaches...Memory is like sand in my hand. I keep some and some is going. The beaches are the thread, and it’s true that I’ve been on beaches all my life. I know that if I need the ideal place, it’s the perfect one for me. This has nothing to do with swimming or surfing or sailing. It’s the pleasure of watching the beach, which means watching the sky and the sea, and if you go at a different time, it can be different light and weather, it can be white or it can be flat. I love it when it’s almost flat. It’s so pure that it’s like the beginning of the world. And it allows me, as a metaphor, to believe that I was always on the beach in my mind.”
Agnès Varda “The Beaches of Agnès”| Film

If you opened me up, you’d find birds, leaves, changing landscapes, changing colours. Handwritten letters and postcards from different landscapes. There would be a forest, a lake, a sea, a mountain, a meadow, a field. Curvy sand roads, harbours. Old wooden houses, gardens. Emptiness. Lots of open sky.

So happy that this yellow bird has been flying a lot around as a stamp, I have seen many photos. Here are some that I sent and received. Some photos too of an autumn week and the nook I hide today with knitting and answering emails. 💌

Have a sweet weekend! by @annaemilialaitinen

Rainy morning, slow stretches by the painting table. Many cups of green tea. I have been waiting for days like this that feel a little dark outside but cozy inside. Then my aquarelle brushes go so smoothly on the soft cotton paper. Painting today only for myself after a few commissions, no garden work attracting, the rain does its own work there today. The spring bulbs have been planted. Slowly, I am forgetting where I planted them. In the spring they will hopefully make a big surprise.

W︎hen painting, mind is quite empty for a long time. It is the connection of eyes, hand, mind. I’d love to see inside my brain, what happens there those moments. Puff! And the empty mind is gone as raindrops start a loud melody on our roof and I wake up. I see what is on the paper. Did I really paint that?

These flowers I painted in March. Somehow they were forgotten and I only scanned the image this week. That old chocolate brown, do you also see it everywhere these days?

Have a sweet weekend with slow doing! ♡ by @annaemilialaitinen

❀ September Coucou! ❀
How have you been?

Here the summer continues, the blooming is still wild. Collecting seeds, moving plants that look like sea creatures to another place. Collecting weeds. The darling sailor had a birthday, it was celebrated one day as a breakfast, the next day for dinner and the next day for afternoon coffee with friends. It has been days of decisions and writing, walking to see the boat with new, bittersweet eyes. Finding mushrooms, picking sea-buckthorns. Also painting by my painting table.

Home, always under the Big Dipper. ♡ by @annaemilialaitinen

✿ Hello September! ✿ Collecting light, watching it go around, moving with it. Enjoying the golden colours and warmth, making the evenings to look even a little the same. Imagining the disappearing colours to melt together and turning brown like watercolours on too wet paper. Still, some colours are only about to appear. The comfort of darkening evenings and tiny twinkle of lights imitating the morning arriving.

Have a sweet first of September!

Ahoi! ♡ Lighthousekeeperess diary entry from the weekend, on an international lighthouse day. A green and calm lagoon to enter, framed by forest islands. A red and white double decker lighthouse with two lanterns greeting from year 1892. This lighthouse has a connection to Eiffel tower and is the second tallest here in Finland. Such a beauty with many buildings around it, had to take a peek to the sauna there too.

Soft cliffs to walk and jump. On those soft cliffs we cooked our lunch watching the waves. Sea-buckthorns almost ripen, bilberries tasty and many.

A sad landscape of a dead seal on the shore. Cormorants stretching their wings nearby.

I feel so strong and emotional on lighthouse islands, maybe because of my roots of a pilot ancestor on a lighthouse island and her daughter, whose name I am honoured to carry. It always feels very sad to leave this kind of islands behind. Luckily the lighthouse association is taking good care of this place. Hopefully we see again, Yttergrund!

A little walk to a town nearby with so many old wooden houses. On the way home, a long beach to walk and enjoy the warmth.

Happy Tuesday from a lucky girl with a new lighthouse memory to remember! 𓅪 by @annaemilialaitinen

Hello Thursday!
Garden afternoons, forest evenings and mornings. Returning slowly to the painting table each morning. Still lingering in summer, sniffing each flower. ❀ by @annaemilialaitinen

❀𓅪 Hello August! 𓅪❀

How have you been? Have you been swimming, stopped on walks on every bush that made the sweetest berries to taste, to sniff every flower, to feel the wind, to feel the sun on your skin, to marvel everything that is green.

Some moments here and there of raspberry July. It looks like August is still a raspberry month.

Happy Sunday and happy August, that is full of summer still! ♡ by @annaemilialaitinen

Onnen kukat -postimerkit tekevät jokaisesta kirjeestä pienen taideteoksen. 🥹🫶 @annaemilialaitinen kuvittamissa merkeissä hehkuvat raikkaat vesivärit ja luonnon kauneus. 🌸

Mikä näistä viidestä merkistä on sun lemppari?
