Hello. 🌞 I’m unwell lately, and watercolor is coming to the rescue again. Thank heaven for watercolor. 🙏🏼 I thoroughly enjoyed painting these leaves. The unexpected color outcomes are always a treat for me! I used a green, a purple, an orange-red, and a metallic copper. A mix of brands. I hope you enjoy some peace today. 🤍 Ann

If you’ve noticed that I’ve been much quieter over the past season, it’s because I just don’t have energy to keep up. I continue to make art, but life stressors have been overwhelming, forcing my body to rest much more these days. So I do not currently have energy to make reels like I used to. If you’re new to my content, please know that I have many instructive reels on my account. Feel free to take some time to peruse. ☺️

Starting now, when I do have energy to make instructional videos, I’ll primarily be sharing them with my newsletter subscribers. If you are not yet a subscriber, hop over to my website and grab my free watercolor guide. That will add you to my email list.

I’ve never used a sketchbook for practice or inspiration, but I have now started one. In an attempt to stay active here on IG, I will be sharing tidbits from my sketchbook explorations. The pics in this post are from my first pages. Thank you to @laurahornart for her fantastic podcast, resources, and social media presence. I have followed her work for years now, and she’s the reason I’m finally trying a sketchbook at this time. (I’m a huge fan, Laura. 🤍) Please consider checking out her page, and grab her free Abstract Pattern Play course while you can!

Happy creating to you! 🤍 Ann

I’m pretty sure this painting is finished, but it’s always possible that it isn’t. Time will tell. ☺️ Happy Sunday to you!

I’ve been obsessed with teal, so I’ve been working with a limited palette to sharpen my skill in mixing all sorts of blue-green colors. ✅ Save this reel so you can find my notes later. 😎

I’ve been practicing with Liquitex Basics acrylic paint…

1) For pretty blue-green mid-tones:

Phthalo blue and Phthalo green, together, create lovely blue-greens, but their vibrancy can be “too much”. If you want to mute their in-your-face vibrancy, add a touch (or more) of burnt umber to mute them. Cadmium yellow (medium or light) shifts the blue-green, and keeping a touch of burnt umber in the mix keeps the palette cohesive.

2) For the darkest darks:

Mix somewhat equal parts burnt umber and Phthalo blue (and some Phthalo green , if desired) to create gorgeous deep blues and blue-greens that look like black. No need for black paint in this palette.

3) For the lights:

Transparent mixing white mixed with any of the mixes noted above will create a tint (lighter version) of the color without dulling it. Titanium white also lightens the color, and it will dull it somewhat as it is opaque. Sometimes, titanium white added to a pretty blue-green mix will create paint that looks like old mint toothpaste. 🙃

If you give these colors a try, have fun with them! I’ve loved my time with teals, but a shift is coming because I’ve fallen in love with a new palette that I can’t wait to try. 🤍

Happy Saturday! 🌞 I rested lots yesterday, and my autoimmune flare is calming down. I’m feeling a lot better so far this morning. 🙏🏼 Thank you to everyone who wished me well. I deeply appreciate your positive and encouraging vibes! 🤍 This morning, I painted my version of a coneflower. I used Daniel Smith watercolors in olive green and phthalo turquoise. The paper is Bockingford by St Cuthberts Mill. And as noted in the reel, the brush is a Princeton Velvetouch Petals brush size 10. Happy painting to you!! 🌞 Ann

The result of perseverance. I started this painting a week ago on Saturday, and it was coming along beautifully. Then, on Saturday evening, I received rather disturbing news. On Sunday, I processed my emotions through painting on this canvas. I painted too much and too quickly and ruined what I had begun on Saturday. So I scraped off all paint that would release from the canvas and added some modeling paste to quiet areas that were too busy or too dark. 🤍 When the time was right yesterday, I began again and finished it this morning. I love what came through me, and it would never have happened if I were the type to give up when things get ugly. This piece has history in its layers. It is a piece of me, and I love it. - Ann

Abstraction is difficult. It has taken much observation, experimentation, and reflection to lead me here—a summer well spent. 🌞 I’m developing skills in color, composition, and value, and these paintings are a couple of examples of where I’ve arrived. These paintings wouldn’t exist if I lacked faith in the beautiful possibilities along the path that is the creative’s unknown. 🤍 I am not currently selling my art, but I hope to someday. These original pieces are 12x12” mixed media paintings on canvas. Not for sale.

Happy Sunday! 🌞 This summer, I’ve been enjoying time with family and exploring techniques for mixed media painting, so my watercolor reels have been few and far between. I also haven’t kept up with my newsletter, and I’m hoping to change that. This week, I’m crossing my fingers that I am able to create a full-length tutorial for my newsletter subscribers. Wish me luck. 🙂 And if you haven’t yet joined my email list to receive newsletters from me, hop over to my website and grab my free guide. Happy painting to you! 🤍 Ann
