POSTS STORIES REELS

Recently I found myself tumbling down the rabbit hole when in search of information about women who were transformed into plants. Abundant in Greek and Roman traditions, the change from fauna to flora happens in moments of duress. It could be triggered by a desire to avoid unwanted romantic advances, as an individual expression of grief, or as these women assume complicated roles in larger divine narratives. Metamorphosing from one state to another, pivots the woman from one potential outcome to something quite different. These women are beings in a constant of flux, as we all are, all of the time, whether or not we acknowledge it.

3pm to 5pm- Today is the day!

Artist talk and opening reception for Root System at Wildflower Sculpture Park at South Mountain Reservation in New Jersey. Each of the artists will speak about their work on a guided walk through.

Open to everyone.

My work, “Mycenae”, is made primarily of mycelium, the root like structure of fungi. It is intentionally evolving over time, becoming part of the swamp environment in which it is located, with other life forms taking up residence on the figure (including a slug).

Thank you to Doris, Penni and South Mountain folks for making this possible, a wonderful opportunity for me to play in the forest. The exhibition will be on display until the end of the year (constantly changing in the case of my work).

A “bronchial tree” refers to the network of airways inside lungs. The tubes split and repeat, over and over, just like the branches or roots of a tree. This work is based on an idea about human lungs which have been grown in a ceramic mold. The splitting maximizes the surface area for exchange of oxygen through the blood system. by @anondabellart

Foiled by the precipitation of the Gods - once again we must cancel the opening reception for Wildflower Sculpture Park exhibition, “Root System”.

Please feel free to join us for an artist walk and talk, Sunday October 25 from 3pm to 5pm.

Stay safe this weekend if you are in the vicinity, it is going to be quite the storm.

WILDFLOWER SCULPTURE PARK
Reception next weekend - South Mountain Reservation
3pm to 5pm Sunday September 20, free and open to all. My work is located near Black Willow Pond, located just off the Lavender Loop Trail.

Mycenae
2026
Hemp, mycelium, cotton, fiberglass, paper

From Greek mythology, Mycenae was a water nymph, the offspring of a river god. Her name can also be spelled Mycene or Mykene, and her namesake is the ancient golden city of Mycenae. One origin story suggests the city was created when Perseus lost part of his sword - the cap (known as myces) fell from the scabbard to the ground. Myces is the Greek word for mushroom.

Mycenae was a minor entity in a time of mythology known as the primordial era. It is believed that the universe was emerging from formless chaos. People as such did not exist, more forces and concepts of earth, sky, time and darkness. My Mycenae is located within the swamp area of the Wildflower Sculpture Park. Her form is created with mycelium, the root like structure of fungus and mushrooms. She appears to have both emerged from the earth and will eventually be subsumed by it again. The inevitable, ongoing states of decay being a welcome part of the creative process.

Evening Star Studio presents, Eat It! an exhibition of ceramics that explores food, eating and community through ceramics. Celebrations center food and friendships and family. Food brings joy and comfort. It sustains, repairs and reminds. Food is centered daily in our lives and holds a special place in our communities. It is cultural and familiar and it is love and loss. It can also complicate lives and become scarce or painful for many. It must be considered a human right and hunger must be disallowed. As grocery prices climb and environmental crises affect food security we can look to food to explore its politics.

The ceramic artworks in this exhibition look to explore our relationship to food individually and in community. The pieces in Eat It! remind us of the joy and fun in food as well as the complex social and political role food occupies in our lives.

Gallery hours daily 8am-1pm. Contact Beth DiCara ahead of your visit at 201-388-7323 to confirm.

A flash back to the time I decided to grow a portrait of Daphne. Made from grass and grown in a ceramic hand-built mold, she was scaled to my own body.

This Double Daphne is both present and absent, inside and out, plant and animal, alive and dead. So many of the contradictions which counter any attempts at neatly and clearly classifying anything in the world as one thing and not another. The beauty lies in the hybridity, the intriguing ambiguity, and the beautifully futile attempts to be certain.

Revisiting Daphne - The Residue of Art Making - “the physical or conceptual trail left behind by the creature process”, more specifically in this case, studio floor debris. Much of this tends to accumulate when I am in residence at SVA’s Bio Art Lab.

Self Portrait (with Agar and slime mold on ceramic)

Made during my residency at the SVA Bio Art Laboratory, slime mold is an unpredictable medium and (involuntary) collaborator. Agar, as a medium used in laboratories to support and cultivate living forms was ‘invented’ by a New Jersey lass by the name of Fanny Angelina Hesse. She repurposed an agar based jelling agent found in Asian cuisine to create the laboratory agar used around the world.

Being female she received no formal science education, but through marriage to a doctor she was exposed to scientific process. Her husband was trying (unsuccessfully) to isolate and grow bacteria on gelatin. This material is unstable when exposed to different temperatures and Fanny suggested trying agar instead.

Tonight’s wonder - I believe I am to be a Roach Mother (again). A number of the females in my once Ladies-Only colony are “up the duff”, each with potentially somewhere between 20 to 60 children. This roach has temporarily extruded her egg sack, which will be pulled back into her body, gestated further, with the very tiny roaches being born live in about 60 days.

Madagascan Cockroaches are illegal in Australia, due to strict biological rules for the country/continent. Earlier in June a gentleman described as the “Cockroach Kingpin” was caught with a record 100,000 roaches, Australian street value of $200,000 (USD $142,000). Australia has no need for an introduced cockroach with hundreds of our own species (none as large as the Madagascan).

Minthe was a nymph in Greek mythology and the concubine of Hades, Ruler of the Underworld. When he abducted Persephone (Goddess of Spring and vegetation) and brought her home as his wife, Minthe was not so pleased. She boasted that the union would be short lived. That Persephone was a waste of time and that she, Minthe, was of superior character and form. A miffed Persephone crushed Minthe to dust, and from this grew the ground hugging mint plant. Hades, perhaps with a guilty conscious and finding himself unable to reverse this course of action gave the new form of Minthe a sweet smell, by way of very small compensation.
