the old wheel of the year is turning again… proudly presenting the 2nd issue of Hot Girl Almanac, the September issue! Typed on an Olympia typewriter, printed @iprc_pdx in indigo & melon ink, & with images from the public domain image archive. Free issues available at @shifty_gnome ‘s upcoming newsletter night! this has been a long, long, hot, hot summer for me. Luckily i’ve recently been feeling like dried out summer grass getting its 1st fall rain. There is much to be learned from this seasons’ folklore, e.g. the trees releasing parts of themselves to the underworld, as we exit the warm rich months of play & enter the dominion of the cold & moon. i hope you find your increased connection to the rhythms of the year as thrilling as i do. ok, here’s something I made just for fun for @emmawisegnome ‘s newsletter night, since the last thing I shared with you had high stakes! as a city cat I often feel disconnected from the cycle of the year, so I’ve been doing research to see what traditions other people across time and space have practiced in to feel more connected with the world around them ✺ Typed using a typewriter, calligraphy pen, & riso printed @iprc_pdx in melon + cornflower blue! I hope I have given you the weird gift of being inspired by the past! Stay tuned for the July issue. thx 4 reading this & im out of here 𓇢𓆸 anth by @ansklaven
Thank you to everyone who showed up & showed interest in/for You Are The Archive: Databases, Curation, & Tying Lose Ends, a workshop held at @iprc_pdx ! Most historians wish they could tell the future, but this time I actually could because I was right that the thoughtful collections my students curated were my favorite part of this workshop! These collections will be displayed at official launch party for the zine library searchable catalog, but I included bitsy photos for now ✶𓏲ּ꩜ .ᐟ … here’s a little something I wrote in regards to “how did i get here?” & “what’s at stake?”: Historians are nothing without archives (perhaps just amnesiac journalists). Archives are the containers for the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. The maintenance of an archive is a process where we’re constantly re-interrogating what we care about, what we don’t, and how we tell people about it. There are high stakes involved with telling alternative stories/narratives other than those backed by state power — libraries exist in the tension of being institutions/spaces that increase access to information that police are often tasked with censoring. Identity is ultimately tied to memory, and the spaces we maintain inform public memory — the zine library, as a community resource, shapes and preserves memories and stories that might not have otherwise survived. Ultimately, I believe in the power of spaces to change us as much as we change them, classrooms especially. And the best learning comes from captivating storytelling, and zines are nothing if not captivating. [if the objects we create are prophecies of the futures we will inhabit, then the existence of the IPRC zine library bodes quite well] stay tuned for the next iteration of thing thing that is close to my heart …. thank you for reading this & im out of here, anthi by @ansklaven
“You Are The Archive: Curation, Databases, & Tying Lose Ends” is a workshop taking place Wednesday, June 24th, at the @iprc_pdx … ✶ 𓏲 ꩜ .ᐟ The Story Tells You As Much About What Happened As It Tells You About The Storyteller. In celebration of the upcoming release of the IPRC’s digitized zine library archive, participants of this workshop will learn the history of the IPRC’s zine library, how historians use archives for curation and research, and have a chance to curate and share their own mini-collection of zines from the beta version of the online searchable zine library catalog. We look forward to seeing new & familiar faces! Masks Required * & Provided! [Anthilia Sklavenitis is a multi-media visual artist and research historian whose main job is tying loose ends.
