One day you’re gonna wear space buns to the clinic, per usual, and forget it’s picture day… also per usual. You’ll start taking your hair down, and your client’s gonna bop you-HARD!, grab her AAC device, and say, “keep hair.” 😭 So you turn to your other client and ask, “You think she’s right? Should I keep it?” and at 4, her first word ever is “pretty.” 🥹💛 yeah… I’ll keep the buns 🪐✨

Good ABA sessions aren’t always perfect sessions! 📊✨

Sometimes the patient is engaged and everything goes according to plan. Other times, we’re adjusting expectations, following motivation, rebuilding rapport, and finding new opportunities to teach.

And guess what? That’s part of being an effective clinician.

Pair first. Follow motivation. Reinforce communication. Capture opportunities. Take the data.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s meaningful, individualized progress. 💙🩷

BCBAs and RBTs, what’s ONE thing you prioritize during every session? 👇🏽

I recently had the opportunity to participate in a baby sea turtle release at Rancho Carvasia, and it was such a fun and memorable experience! 💙

I absolutely LOVE their mission of protecting sea turtles, educating visitors, and supporting conservation efforts. Watching those tiny turtles make their way toward the ocean was something special! 🥹🐢

But of course, my BCBA brain never completely turns off. 😂🧠

While I enjoyed the experience, I couldn’t help but evaluate the environment from an autism and accessibility perspective.

⚠️ A few things stood out:

🔊 Sensory Overload: Between the presentation, environmental sounds, and farm animals making noise in the background, there were quite a few competing sensory stimuli. For someone with auditory sensitivities, this could quickly become overwhelming.

🐴 Distractions: The farm animals were fun to see, but their sounds during the educational presentation could make it challenging for individuals who have difficulty filtering competing stimuli or sustaining attention.

🌙 Safety & Elopement Concerns: The walk from the beach back to the ranch was not well lit. Combined with the open environment and limited visibility, this created some significant concerns for individuals who may wander or engage in elopement.

💙 My takeaway?

I loved the experience, and I genuinely appreciate the work Rancho Carvasia is doing. However, based on what I observed, I wouldn’t recommend this particular experience for individuals with significant sensory sensitivities or elopement risks without additional planning and individualized safety supports.

And that’s an important distinction!

An experience can be wonderful and still have accessibility barriers.

Accessibility isn’t about expecting every environment to be perfect. It’s about recognizing potential barriers, helping families make informed decisions, and advocating for experiences that more people can safely enjoy.

✨ Inclusion means thinking beyond the experience itself and considering what it takes for everyone to participate.

There’s something special about watching a future BCBA put in the work, trust the process, and see it pay off. 🎉💙

Passing the exam is a milestone, but the bigger goal is helping shape professionals who are confident, compassionate, and competent in the work they’ll carry forward.

That’s the kind of progress worth celebrating. ✨

That’s more than a “good day.” That’s functional communication replacing behavior that previously communicated the same need. And when that skill starts showing up outside of therapy with caregivers? THAT is progress worth celebrating. 🎉

Reinforcement isn’t bribery—it’s one of the ways we teach, strengthen meaningful skills, and increase the likelihood they’ll happen again. When we use reinforcement intentionally, we’re creating opportunities for success. 💙📈

BCBA love language = “They did it independently!” 😭📊💙

There’s something different about seeing a skill go from modeled → prompted → faded → INDEPENDENT. Those are the moments that remind us why all the data collection, program updates, supervision, and tiny adjustments matter.

Now excuse me while I go stare at the graph. 😂

Before we label behavior as “noncompliance,” there’s more to assess. 📂🧠

Does the patient understand the expectation? Is the task appropriate? Is reinforcement actually meaningful? Are they communicating a need? Have we established enough rapport?

Behavior doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Context matters—and understanding should come before intervention. 💙

Behind every meaningful breakthrough is a process. 💙🩷

As BCBAs, we’re constantly observing, analyzing, teaching, collaborating, and adjusting. What worked yesterday may need to look different tomorrow—and that’s exactly why the data matter.

The goal isn’t just behavior change. It’s building skills that create greater independence, stronger communication, and meaningful change that lasts. ✨

Progress is the product of an intentional process.

Behavior analysis changes lives—not by changing who someone is, but by helping individuals build meaningful skills, increase independence, and access more opportunities to thrive. 💙🧩

At Applied Behavior Breakthrough, we believe compassionate, evidence-based support should empower the whole person while equipping families with tools that create lasting change. ✨

As a Black-owned business, every referral, share, recommendation, and family who trusts us with their care helps us continue building something rooted in purpose, people, and progress. 🖤
