The Vegetarian by Han Kang. Translated from the Korean by Deborah Smith. Fiction. 188 pages. 2007. This novel is unsettling — can't find any other word for it — exactly like it's meant to be. One might think that it's just another novel about vegetarianism, and it does begin with Yeong-hye suddenly deciding to give up on meat, but then Han Kang takes you on a journey that you couldn't possibly have seen coming. Divided into three sections, with each section focusing on three different people, all the while revolving around the central character – Yeong-hye, The Vegetarian is as much about humanity (and the lack of it, in certain instances) as it is about the world we live in. All the ways in which the people in Yeong-hye's life react to her decision and her slow transformation into someone unrecognizable, make you feel such rage, pain, and sheer disbelief that you struggle to keep reading, but also cannot bring yourself to put down the book. The Vegetarian is a lot about nature and how we connect and disconnect with it, yes, but it's also about misogyny, abuse, sexuality, incarceration, and love. Expect to be taken through graphic dreams, disturbing scenes and difficult emotions that seep through every page of this novel. P.S. Please check the content warnings before picking up this book. . . #books #bookstagram #koreanliterature #hankang by @aqueershadeofpurple
