Drawing is and always will be at the heart of my practice…… Drawing allows experimentation, the evolution of subject matter and the constant push/pull of risk taking through mark making. Most of my drawings never see the light of day. They are not about what works or what does not work. They are my way of asking questions without words. #contemporaryartist #contemporarydrawings by @arabellasim_

Today the heat is here…..in progress a small blue oil. Blues were needed today. Though my studio relatively cool with the north soft light……. Blue calms, cools and holds a spiritual meaning in art going back centuries. ‘Lapis Lazuli’ blue was the most expensive pigment during the Renaissance and typically reserved for the Virgin Mary’s cloak. Cape St Frances comes to mind….a wild part of Newfoundland where I would spend hours drawing and looking at the waves. On the most far northern point of the island the criss-crossing currents gave off an eerie yet breathtakingly beautiful energy. A studio space evolves in its own unique time and space. Slowly connections between the paintings, drawings, words and thoughts begin to interweave. Clarity emerges often at the most surprising moments…..though embracing the inbetween ‘chaos’ always remains. Trusting in these polar opposites is vital. “A room of one’s own” Virginia Woolf. Never a truer word spoken…..and this postcard a friend sent me years ago is always the first to be pinned up on a new studio wall. Tracey Emin is another inspiration…..her words about art, following your own path and art’s role in today’s fragmented society is another gem. My studio is my own room…..and showing up is always the first step. #artiststudio #virginiawoolf #traceyemin by @arabellasim_

Drawing…….there are times I find it easier to draw rather than talk. Beauty is in the human form The movement The skin The shadows The language of the limbs Without words the human form expresses all….. truthfully in its essence in its raw state. The human form: It is an emergent subject. As with paint I draw with no fixed techniques. It is a process of finding digging …..allowing the subject matter to emerge. The outcome is always unknown. These drawings are sketches still in process….. #contemporaryartist #drawing #humanform by @arabellasim_
Paint…….beloved. I follow few rules with oil paint. Fat over lean being the one exception. Oil paint has a life of its own. I genuinely don’t know ‘how’ I paint. This has both positive and negative connotations: Positive: The alchemy of paint never fails to give me a deep sense of connection to this world we live in. Negative: With each new work I feel like a beginner. The importance of trusting one’s process is fundamental. And the art of Risk must always play a part…… #contemporaryartist #oilpainting by @arabellasim_
. Beautiful blues from my studio skylight……….it’s as if these blues are gently seeping into one of my paintings below. There’s something about looking up at the sky at this time of year….. infinite skies infinite possibilities ………and even the relentless rain against the skylight offers a gentle reassuring sound. #artiststudio #contemporaryartist by @arabellasim_

From my morning drawing diary….. What is poetry? These words came tumbling out this morning…… hand to hand hand to eye eye to heart heart to feeling Using one’s hands connects our senses on multiple levels. This connection starts from a young age and through beyond into our 90s….. I know this as once a week with my Dad (who is 90) we draw and paint together. Next year I hope to work with younger children who are griefing and could benefit from a connection to art. When I was younger I used to dream of running an arts place called ‘Hands’. Alongside the above, New Year promises my beginning into my newly primed set of multiple canvases. Drawings in tandem, I feel a hopeful year ahead. Wishing you all a peaceful run up to the Christmas festivities. #contemporaryartist by @arabellasim_
