The design is based on a 2:4 1/2 black parallelograms, divided in two. We started by proportionally incorporating the necessary grid lines to make the letters “A” and “U”. To form the “A”, we included the circle, letting it cut through the figure, and ultimately portray the word “Arch” behind our logo. by @archuncovered

Rather than adaptively reuse the existing school per the 4A brief, the project expands the campus with a 50,000 SF state-of-the-art facility—introducing bleeding-edge machines, 1:1 mockup construction, full-scale workbenches, and robotic fabrication aligned with the school’s technical ethos. The design preserves the parking lot’s omnidirectional permeability by suspending an occupiable 15’ “tabletop” material library and studio above a triple-height, aircraft-hangar-scale fabrication floor. This hovering plinth shades the glare-prone site while maintaining pedestrian throughput. Selective apertures pull the tabletop downward into leg-like structural supports—the sole supports of the roof and library—admitting controlled daylight on users’ terms. A single mezzanine overlooks the fabrication floor, with cores rising to the library above. Drawing from Reiser + Umemoto, Neil Denari, and Herzog & de Meuron, the project centers on a fifth façade: a Corbusier-esque suspended roof whose granular surface echoes the industrial identity of Los Angeles’s Arts District. Instead, we create public and semi-public communal spaces between each unit, encouraging interaction. This design forms long, slender bar-shaped buildings that eliminate the need for traditional corridors. The building cores not only serve as circulation points but also as social spaces where residents can gather and interact.” Professors: Heather Roberge @murmur_architecture & Lori Choi School: UCLA Architecture and Urban Design @uclaaud @ucla by @archuncovered

Nowadays, fMRI measures brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow. This evolution in the understanding of human beings inspired consideration of student behaviors and programs as the tool to reshape the floor slabs. The existing school is a perfectly standardized “adult-sized” building, students’ sensations are compromised. The spatial variation of programs and dynamic movements of students reconfigured the school’s interior. The new typography brings windows and nature to everyone within the school while it serves as active motion triggers to foster neural diversity.” Professor: Lindy Roy School: Columbia University, Columbia GSAPP @columbiagsapp @columbia by @archuncovered

Given the site parameters of 5 x 11 meters in Kensington Market, the assignment was to redesign our precedents into a livable house with a section dedicated to commercial use. My design is inspired by my exploration of Lina Bo Bardi’s Glass House in Assignment 1, focusing on the relationship between structural transparency and the surrounding vegetation while transitioning from opaque to transparent elements. The design consists of three segments: circulation and facilities are located at the rear; the first two floors, with a glass structure, house a flora shop; and the top floors are residential, divided into two living units. A sail canopy over the residential section provides privacy, filters sunlight, and offers shade to the inhabitants. It concluded that in today’s cities, the ‘refuge’ might not suffice and more can be done to morph the city to the users’ mindful needs. Raffles Place, Singapore was identified to establish the intervention. To develop it in a small, focused scale, bringing in elements which vastly differs from the facade of the city. Natural and organic elements, coupled with a heightened engagement of the senses allow users to experience a different form of city. Incorporating programs where people can destress with the aim of breaking the mono-usage of the central business district. The result is a thoughtfully curated street experience, stimulating your senses when you enter this space. Explore the programs through the slither of gaps intentionally created to provide visual continuity into the facade and internal spaces of the existing buildings along Malacca Street.” Professors: Teh Joo Heng School: National University of Singapore, Department of Architecture @nus.doa by @archuncovered
Authors: Huilin Wu @huilin_n and Jiwei Wang @jiwei_wang33 Title: UnCanny Home Description: UnCanny Home explores the quiet negotiations Chinese immigrants make to transform rigid American housing into culturally resonant domestic spaces. What might appear “awkward” or “out of place” at first glance - like slippers stored in bathroom cabinets or altars placed on AC — are, in fact, canny adaptations that reveal immigrants’ spatial agency. The project captures these uncanny moments not to critique, but to illuminate the layered homemaking process across cultures. Through interviews, photographic documentation, and spatial analysis, the research presents stories from individual families shaped by distinct cultural, regional, and personal backgrounds. The exhibition amplifies these tensions through creative reinterpretations of real domestic conditions, reimagining how cultural rituals might inhabit overlooked, unclaimed, or unconventional spaces. These speculative spatial interventions make visible the hidden discomforts and quiet resilience embedded in immigrant domestic life. UnCanny Home neither romanticizes nor diagnoses but invites reflection on how home is redefined in translation and how design can better respond to diverse cultural ways of living. Directed Research Group: HOMEMAKING is the Directed Research Lab led by Associate Professor Marcos Parga @marcospargap and Assistant Professor Omar Ali @soali At the core of HOMEMAKING ’s mission is a commitment to rethinking domestic space — the places where we dwell and the relationships they embody. Through lectures, design studios, seminars, and workshops, we empower students to become active agents of change, questioning how architecture can respond to shifting social dynamics. The lab critically examines evolving ideas of labor, care, ownership, and family, understanding the home as a site of negotiation where political, cultural, financial, and environmental forces take shape. https://homemaking.website/ School: Syracuse University, School of Architecture @syracuseu @syr_arch by @archuncovered
Authors: Yunan Wei @personalllforest Title: Together Towards; A Prototype for Mutable Domesticity Description: “Together Towards reimagines housing as a temporal and adaptive process, rather than a static form. This multi-family housing prototype serves as a statement that challenges traditional domestic conventions by introducing a modular architecture that evolves with its inhabitants. Anchored by a central communal spine—a monolithic core containing fixed kitchens, bathrooms, and circulation—each living unit begins as a minimal module, expanding outward over time. Influenced by projects such as Takk’s The Day After House and Shigeru Ban’s Naked House, the design incorporates undefined intermediary zones between the core and the facade filled with movable modules to support collective and individual growth. These raw, unconditioned spaces blur the boundary between public and private, encouraging residents to actively shape their environment. The result is a housing system that grows, contracts, and regenerates based on shifting needs and social dynamics. Site-less and scalable, Together Towards presents a vision of home as a living, shared construct—mutable, communal, and continuously unfolding.” Directed Research Group: HOMEMAKING is the Directed Research Lab led by Associate Professor Marcos Parga @marcospargap and Assistant Professor Omar Ali @soali At the core of HOMEMAKING ’s mission is a commitment to rethinking domestic space — the places where we dwell and the relationships they embody.
