A model is not reality. And good ecosystem service modelling is not about exactly what is happening in the ground. In the latest article on our website, we look at what ecosystem service models can (and cannot) tell us, and how they can support better-informed decisions by @aries_sustainability
What is Natural Capital Accounting? by @aries_sustainability
🌳 Where would you plant a tree to create more shade during summer? The answer might seem: plant it where temperatures are highest. But who is most exposed? Who is most vulnerable? Where do people walk, wait, gather and spend time throughout the day? Which solutions fit the realities of the neighbourhood? These questions guided a recent workshop with the City Council of Vitoria-Gasteiz and local stakeholders as part of our project exploring equitable strategies for reducing urban heat risks in Lakua, Zabalgana and Salburua. By combining scientific evidence, local expertise and lived experience, we aim to support climate adaptation strategies that are not only effective, but also feasible and socially just. Swipe through to see why local knowledge matters for building cooler and more resilient cities! More about this project in our bio 🔗 by @aries_sustainability
Greetings from Prague!! The ESP Europe Conference that is taking place these days, and our team members are sharing research and tools to advance in ecosystem accounting and sustainability 🌏 by @aries_sustainability
We’re proud to be part of JUST4CARE, coordinated by @bc3research, bringing together 16 partners across Europe to make climate adaptation more just, inclusive and resilient. ARIES contributes to WP3, led by our urban modeller Sudeshna Kumar, focusing on adaptive risk assessment and vulnerability management. 👏 Congrats to the BC3 team and all JUST4CARE partners for leading this inspiring Horizon Europe journey! 💚 More info in bio👆 #JUST4CARE #BC3 #ARIES #HorizonEurope #ClimateAdaptation #ClimateJustice #AI4Sustainability #WomenInScience by @aries_sustainability
🌍 What’s new in the ARIES community? Our latest newsletter is out, featuring fresh tools, new partnerships, and thought-provoking insights from across our network: 🔧 The WEED Toolbox alpha launched in Vienna — helping map ecosystems in real time 🏔️ Supporting climate adaptation through Pyrenees4Clima 🛰️ ARIES data now powers field-level insights in AgriSat’s GIS platform ... and more! 📩 Don’t miss out and subscribe for future updates! 🌍Today, we welcomed @ehsan_pashanejad to @bc3research for a visit with the ARIES team! 🌾Ehsan shared his research on designing more sustainable and resilient agricultural landscapes by integrating ecosystem service modeling, landscape connectivity, and spatial optimization. 📊His work demonstrates how spatial tools can provide actionable insights for balancing productivity, biodiversity, and climate resilience. Looking forward to future collaborations! #sustainability #ecosystemservices #biodiversity #climateresilience #interdisciplinaryresearch by @aries_sustainability
🚨 Ecosystem services research is at a turning point. Data is still scattered. Models don’t talk to each other. And decisions suffer because of it. 🧠 A new study led by Ken Bagstad (@usgs), with co-authors Stefano Balbi (@ikerbasque @bc3research), Aidin Niamir (@senckenbergworld), and Zuzana Harmáčková (@czechglobe), shows how #AI and semantic technologies can unlock true interoperability in ecosystem science. 💬 We need to move beyond fragmented systems and build broader consensus around smarter, connected approaches. 📲 Swipe through to see how #interoperability can make ecosystem assessments more scalable, impactful, and decision-ready. 🔗 Full paper & blog post in bio! by @aries_sustainability
🙌 We’ve had an amazing time at #BIOSPACE25! This @europeanspaceagency -hosted event in Frascati was a fantastic chance to connect with global experts and showcase how #EO technologies enhance biodiversity monitoring. It was a pleasure discussing ecosystem accounting and the role of #EO data in biodiversity frameworks, and we hope our ARIES for SEEA demo provided valuable insights into how hashtag#opensource tools can support environmental decision-making. 🙋‍♀️If you'd like to continue the conversation, feel free to connect with us through the link in our bio! #BIOSPACE25 #Biodiversity #EarthObservation #SEEA #Sustainability #naturalcapital #makenaturecount #ecosystem #accounting by @aries_sustainability
🌊 Tidal marshes, found along coastlines worldwide, provide essential services like carbon sequestration, coastal protection, and habitats for diverse species. But with sea levels rising, how resilient are they? 🔬 New study led by ARIES PhD candidate Beñat Egidazu at @bc3research combines #machinelearning and process-based modelling to predict future marsh distributions and assess resilience. 💡 The research not only deepens our understanding of tidal marsh dynamics but also offers a flexible framework that can be applied to other coastal ecosystems, supporting conservation and sustainable management efforts. 📖 Dive into the full study via the link in bio under "Latest Publications." #TidalMarsh #EcosystemResilience #Sustainability #MarineScience by @aries_sustainability
🌍 How can nature help cool our cities? A new study led by Alba Marquez Torres, alongside ARIES urban modeller at @bc3research Sudeshna Kumar, PhD and Celina Aznarez explores the critical role of hashtag#GreenInfrastructure 🌳 and hashtag#BlueInfrastructure 🌊 in reducing urban heat. This research highlights how factors such as park size, vegetation health, and proximity to water contribute to creating more resilient cities. 👆 Discover the insights and strategies for enhancing urban hashtag#sustainability, link in bio! by @aries_sustainability
🌍✨ We are thrilled to announce the release of two significant releases from ARIES that underscore our commitment to #sustainability & #climateaction at @bc3research! 📌 Global Estimates of Carbon Stocks in Vegetation and Soils report: This comprehensive analysis provides crucial insights into global carbon storage trends from 2001-2020, highlighting the vital role that terrestrial ecosystems play in mitigating #climatechange. 📌 Our findings from the Carbon Stocks report informed Chapter 7 of the Changing Wealth of Nations 2024 #CWON report! This holistic approach offers a deeper understanding of the balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability. 🚨 Join us TODAY for the launch event! 🕧 13:00 UCT 🔗https://aries.integratedmodelling.org/aries-hub/global-carbon-storage-report-contribution-to-changing-wealth-of-nations-2024/ #ClimateAction #Sustainability #CarbonStorage #CWON2024 by @aries_sustainability
