A parcel of land in northwest Tucson set to be sold to the Costco Wholesale Corporation has been found to contain important historical artifacts.

The site in question lies off of Sunset Road and I-10. Last month, the county signed a nonbinding letter of intent to sell the 56-acre parcel to Costco for $15 million.

But last week, County Administrator Jan Lesher sent a memo to the Board of Supervisors notifying them of the site’s historical and cultural significance, which was omitted from the site’s initial appraisal.

The site gained notoriety in early 2016, when ancient footprints were discovered embedded in what was an irrigated field some 2,500-3,000 years ago.

As a result, the county will be initiating a consultation with Tribal Nations to discuss the proposed sale. It’s the first time that the county will enact its updated Tribal Consultation policy, which the Board of Supervisors approved last month.

Arizona has a new national park.

President Donald Trump signed the Chiricahua National Park Act into law Tuesday, elevating a national monument into national park status.

The new park is part of the Chiricahua Mountains, about a two-hour drive southeast of Tucson in Willcox.

Tens of thousands of visitors from around the world are drawn to the location annually to see rhyolite rock pinnacles known as hoo-doos – geological rock formations that were formed more than 27 million years ago by a cataclysmic volcanic eruption.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum traveled to the 12,000-acre park in Cochise County for the designation ceremony.

“This is important not just for Arizona and the National Park Service, but it’s important for all Americans who treasure our nation’s most extraordinary landscapes,” Burgum said.

It’s a position that requires attendance at hours-long public meetings.

It demands knowledge of the ins and outs of district policies.

For some, it can feel like a full-time job — except it’s completely unpaid.

But the role of a school district governing board member is essential to carrying out the vision of the students, parents, employees — and ultimately the voters — who reside in those districts.

And yet, school board races see some of the lowest voter turnout.
