I’m still in slight disbelief that this actually happened. Last weekend I took fourth place in the @bass_nation Bassmaster Kayak Series on Clear Lake and qualified for the national championship at Lake Murray in South Carolina! I’ve been bass fishing off and on for the last 25 years but have had many hiatuses from it over the years, and even when I did go I was just fishing from the bank. After finally getting a kayak in the last two years and fishing a lot more, I’ve built enough confidence to start fishing tournaments this year. I’ve always felt I was a decent fisherman but just never thought I’d be able to put it all together at an event at this level.

Earlier in the week in practice I had done pretty well, catching 100-102” per day and knew if I could replicate that on game day I’d have a fair chance at doing well. On day one I had 93.00” and ended the day in fourth place. Day two was a little slower for me but I was still able to put together an 89.25” limit to keep me in that fourth spot by the end. I kept things old school (as that’s pretty much all I know lol) focusing on shallow cover targeting willows, tules, and grass. I caught the majority of my fish flipping a @magnumbaits Punch Beef. My biggest fish was caught on a @snagproof Zoo Kick. Also had a few fish on a @beastcoastfishing Flippin Delight and a @missile_baits D Bomb in the @bl8nkt exclusive Delta Bug color.

I’d like to thank my family and friends for all the prayers, encouragement, and support. Thanks to my coworkers for covering my shifts, allowing me to practice and fish these tournaments. And of course thanks to Bassmaster for bringing this tournament to the west coast and to Steve Owens @steve_owens_0207 for running a great tournament. I fished the BAM Kayak tournament last weekend on Clear Lake and to my surprise walked away with a third place finish, qualifying for the west coast championship in August! I didn’t get a chance to prefish, but had done well in practice the week before for the Yakabass tournament so my game plan was to go back to that area. Had to scrap that plan as the ramp I wanted to launch from wasn’t approved for the tournament due to the windy weather. I was able to find a similar pattern in a new area and put together a decent 90.50” limit. I had three culls in the last half hour which bumped me up a couple placings. Also bagged a $250 @tacklewarehouse gift card! Congrats to all the other competitors. Glad we all made it off the water safe with the crazy wind. Looking forward to the Bassmaster event on Clear Lake in a couple weeks.
