Saint Agatha with her own severed breasts on a silver platter. 🔴The inspiration behind Francisco Zurbaran’s 1630 painting was the 3rd century Sicilian virgin martyr. She faced intense torture after rejecting the romantic advances of the Roman consul. Because Roman law forbade executing a virgin, the executioner had her breasts cut off with hot tongs. #spanishbaroque #louvre #zurbaran #october31 #parisart by @art.cognoscenti
Three artists who caught my eye on the main floor of Grand Palais last week. -Joan Snyder @luhringaugustine never gets old -Moffat Takadiwa, a sculptor from Zimbabwe, working with discarded materials, fabulous! @semiosegalerie -Alteronce Gumby, LA based artist, loved his work+collector friendly prices @jeffreydeitchgallery. #newyorkartadvisory #artbaselparis #contemporaryart #artcollector by @art.cognoscenti
Pre-Basel Paris gallery openings (working backwards), with the artists in attendance. Truly global vibe here (Cameroon, France, Morocco, USA and Colombia). Sesse Elangwe (pic. 1-2) Hassan Hajjajj (pic. 3-4) Gaëlle Choisne (pic. 5-6) Hank Williams (pic. 7-9) Oscar Murillo (10) by @art.cognoscenti
With over 200 galleries from 40 countries bringing their best artworks to Grand Palais in Paris, it came as a surprise (to myself) that this piece from an LA-based artist, Patrick Jackson, was one of the very few pieces that touched me the most. The “mother” is an adult doll acquired by the artist from China. She is dressed in his own mother’s clothing, complete with white nurse’s sneakers. Untitled (Mother and Child), 2026 Adult doll, reborn. baby, resin, clothing by @art.cognoscenti
Just saw the First Lady of France walking into Art Basel (with her security detail, of course). The timing of the visit is important: the fair opened to the VIPs on Tuesday this week, yet Mme. Macron is here during the only public day (the fair closed two days before the schedule due to the social unrest in France. #artbaselparis2026 #brigittemacron #frenchpolitics #artmarket #newyorkartadvisory by @art.cognoscenti
Some notable pre-Basel shows I saw yesterday in Marais and Avenue Matignon: Loved the “impromptu” card game behind the bars and stark black walls, which created a perfect setting for the opening of #amoakoboafo solo show @marianeibrahimgallery #artbaselparis #contemporaryart #nigerianart #newyorkartadvisory by @art.cognoscenti
“…all British artists have a weight of Cecily Brown, Francis Bacon and Picasso on their shoulders”. Koji Inoue, partner at @Houserwirth. 🔴Before leaving for Art Basel Paris, I sprinted through Chelsea, mainly to catch George Rouy’s sold-out show at @hauserwirth. I first met George at @halfgallery in New York this past March, when the London-based artist came to support Irish painter #PeterDoyle, whose show had just opened at the Annex. My second encounter with Rouy—or rather, with his monumental painting—came in June at Art Basel in Basel, where it was fittingly displayed in the Unlimited sector. Pic 1. Koji’s hand pointing out George Rouy’s technique. Pic 2. “Dissimulated Nude” Pic 3. Excited for my friend, Paris based painter Mathieu Cherkit , who was featured in Le Monde. According to the article, he is “a painter whose canvases turn familiar domestic interiors into quiet puzzles: his figuration is deliberately «disturbed,» with viewpoints that slip between eye level and impossible angles, as if he painted while levitating or from the ceiling, and each canvas hides small anomalies — a spotlight burning at the foot of a sunlit staircase, a pair of bare legs stretched at the painter’s feet as a voyeur peeks through the studio window, a face impossibly reflected in a tiny mirror balanced on a sink». #contemporaryart #paris4 #artadvisorynyc by @art.cognoscenti
