POSTS STORIES REELS

Once in while, something happens out of the blue while painting. Occasionally, this sparks an idea that then appears, in different ways, in future paintings. Issue 5 of Every Artwork Has A Story is available now if you want to find out more about a recurring motif in my work and how it came about (link in bio). #artcollector #animalart by @artbymikejory

I started the Alexander Technique 27 years ago due to chronic pain, I had no idea that it would impact my art so profoundly. You can read the full story in issue 4 of Every Artwork Has A Story (link in bio) #alexandertechnique @alexandertechuk #artcollector by @artbymikejory

Once in a while, I stumble on something that really helps the way that I paint and draw. It's usually something pretty simple and one of those "Why haven't I been doing that the whole time?" moments. You can find out more in issue 3 of Every Artwork Has A Story. Link in bio. #artcollector #artcollecting #portraitpainter #portraitpainting by @artbymikejory

In general, progressing as an artist involves a hotch potch of experiences, inspirations and lots of trial and error. Over the years, despite a few trips down unhelpful roads, the hope is that things move in a generally positive direction. So with all this stuff going on, it's rare to be able to look back and pin-point a precise moment in time that changed my artistic style forever. However, one such moment is the focus of issue 2 of 'Every Artwork Has A Story '. Link in bio. #artist #lifedrawing #painting by @artbymikejory

One teacher changed the way I would see for the rest of my life. Among many other things, my O-level art teacher, John Wealthy, taught me that cigarette ash can be used to create art! But he taught me far more than how to draw. He taught me to look at the world in different ways — and more than 40 years later, I can still see his influence in my paintings.
I've written about him, and some of the things he taught me, in the first issue of my new newsletter:

'Every Artwork Has A Story.'

It's free, and I'll be publishing stories from more than four decades of painting and drawing.

I'm currently celebrating 15 years of creating belted galloway cattle paintings, so I'm stoked to have my artwork featured on the cover of the "Beltie Bugle" 😉 I've put together an exhibition of some of my favourite beltie-inspired artwork, link in bio #beltedgalloways #belties by @artbymikejory

Had fun painting this while livestreaming on youtube the other day. This is just part of the painting and it's still a work in progress but I'm going to keep it light and lively. #beltie by @artbymikejory
