A week ago today we opened an exhibition by AKY in ArtHaus Mampong Akuapem. The exhibition is showing till the 17th of April 2024 We would like to thank everyone who showed up for AKY’s exhibition. AKY has long had an interest in art. In her childhood, she visited galleries and longed to paint. But circumstances never aligned for her artistic desires to be fulfilled. And then “something triggered” in the days nearing her retirement, which functioned as the cue she needed to go on and paint—not in pursuit of acclaim; but to fill her time with a creative, fulfilling activity. AKY has since painted for at least a decade now, engaged in a committed private practice whose visions and motivations are entirely personal. The work generally has an unassuming air to it; but that is only deceptively so, as a look beyond first glance would reveal, for instance, some risqué depictions. Her paintings burst with colour and feature a host of figures and characters, representational and abstracted, engaged in a range of activities—one painting, which references an Indian folktale, shows two men reaching up treetops to pluck penises. . ArtHaus Open days: Tuesdays|Thursdays|Saturdays 10:00am-4:00pm However please note that Saturdays are based on appointments.
