This autumn, the west bank of the Mississippi River, just south of the iconic Gateway Arch, will erupt with music, sound, art and fire. For a single October weekend, St. Louisans can experience the city’s beating creative heart at the annual Artica Festival. Bristling with music, visual art, immersive installation pieces and culminating in the burning of a 20- to 40-foot-tall wooden effigy on Sunday night, Artica has drawn comparisons to Burning Man, the weeklong event held yearly in the Nevada desert since 1990. Yes, both Burning Man and Artica feature conflagrations of impressive proportions. And both events discourage spectating, encouraging participation from every visitor. But as someone who has performed at Artica for the past couple of years — with plans to play music at this year’s festival — that’s where the similarities end. Tap the link in our bio for an insider look at the roots of this offbeat festival from one of the musicians who’s performing this year. ✍️: Bob Grant for STLPR 📸: Brian Munoz | @brianmmunoz by @articastl
St. Louis and Galway are sister cities. Most people in either one couldn’t tell you what that means. This weekend at Artica we’re trying to fix that. There’s a craft table where you can make a postcard to Galway, a soapbox for anyone who wants to say something, and a table with info on how to get involved. Come make something. Come say hi to Ireland on camera. We’re building a real cultural exchange between the two scenes. Artists, musicians, writers, poets, and the people who make it all work. Gateway to Galway is coming summer 2027. Artica is this weekend all day/night Saturday Oct 3 and Sunday Oct 4 through nightfall for the burn. Capturing the true magic of ARTICA! For years now, you can find thang_ho_photography wandering the festival grounds with his camera and monopod catching the details of what truly make ARTICA so unique. Not only does he capture the beauty of the festival, the burn, the artists and their art, but also the festival goers! While dressing up, expressing yourself, and showing off your own artistic style isn’t required, it is part of what makes ARTICA so special. Everyone who attends adds a personal touch to the weekend. Prog-rock cultist trio performs ritual jams for awakening the Great Toad God! harpojarvi is deeply honored to have been granted the responsibility of the performance slot directly following the burn, to sprinkle you all with sounds and allow it to fall upon you like the ashes of the burning effigy. A lot of new faces and few old familiar ones are around and performing this year! They are also excited to peruse all the visual arts as well. It’s always inspiring to see what people come up each year of ARTICA. Join them October 4th at 8pm as they undertake the performance of their latest release, Toadstradamus! It will be a 41 minute piece in 8 different parts. Witness it for yourself as Uncle Toad guides you through a tale of romance, betrayal, toad licking, subsequent prophetic disgorgement, and a fierce battle of fate! If you like their performance this weekend you can also see them perform October 9th at CBGB October 23rd at Platypus Check the out on instagram or on bandcamp #artistspotlight #artistfeature #ARTICASTL #ARTICA2026 by @articastl

Larger than life loops and big bass for ancestral orchestral kestrels @carolynfingyrs is so excited to perform at ARTICA again this year and allow their jams to help color all the art, while the art colors their music! They can’t wait to see so many familiar faces from ARTICA’s past and of course stick around for the burn!! If they are not performing solo or with their band harpojarvi they love to lend a helping hand to help make the festival a reality. Whether it’s assembling a stage or sweeping up broken glass, no task is too large or too small. They love the chaotic last-minute energy that comes from all the volunteers rising to the occasion to make ARTICA great. It always seems to come together just in time! If you would like to be a part of the wonderful volunteer team to help make this year’s festival amazing check out the sign up link to see what openings are still available!
