HaPpY Halloween‼️
🧛‍♂️🧟‍♀️🎃👻 On this SpOOkY day, an homage to my father, Martin Mordecai Katz, who introduced me to all genres of art and literature. As a fan of the macabre, Poe was one of his favorite authors. Elvgren was his favorite pin-up illustrator (and mine). When he had the pleasure of restoring an Albright, he introduced me to his work - a brilliant observation of our inescapable mortality; my favorite is Dorian Gray (pictured here) based on Wilde’s gothic novel. by @artlustchicago

“1 WITCH. Thrice the brinded cat hath mew’d.
2 WITCH. Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin’d.
3 WITCH. Harpier cries:—‘tis time! ‘tis time!
1 WITCH. Round about the caldron go;
In the poison’d entrails throw.—
Toad, that under cold stone,
Days and nights has thirty-one;
Swelter’d venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot!
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.” Shakespeare - Macbeth

Four Jews walk into a church… my family attended mass during which my husband, Stephen Citron, was honored with a mention for his stellar restoration of these two paintings. Following mass was this beautiful and moving procession. This specific tradition is known as the Procesión del Señor de los Milagros (The Lord of Miracles). It is a replica of one of the largest religious processions in the world, originating in Lima, Peru, and kept alive today by the Peruvian immigrant community in Chicago neighborhoods like Albany Park.
The Historical Origin
The Painting (1651): The history begins in the 1650s in Lima, Peru. An Angolan slave painted an image of the crucified Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Mary Magdalene on a crude adobe wall in a slave quarters storehouse.
The Miraculous Survival (1655): On November 13, 1655, a devastating earthquake leveled nearly the entire city of Lima. Thousands died, and almost every building crumbled—except for the fragile adobe wall holding the painting, which remained completely untouched.
The First Processions (1687): After another massive earthquake in 1687 again left the wall unscathed, a copy of the mural was painted on a canvas canvas, placed on a wooden frame, and carried through the streets to pray for protection.
The Tradition in Albany Park Today
When Peruvian immigrants moved to Chicago, they brought this 370-year-old tradition with them. Every October (a month known to Peruvians as Mes Morado or “Purple Month”), devotees dress in purple robes, burn incense, and form a brotherhood to physically shoulder a massive, heavily decorated litter (anda) holding the replica image through the neighborhood streets. by @artlustchicago

Thrilled to be facilitating the sale of this rare piece by Holocaust survivor, Curt Frankenstein. Kindly DM with inquiries.
“Final Call” — Curt Frankenstein (1920-2009)
Who are the dead still trying to reach? This extraordinary oil painting stops you cold.
A Victorian cemetery, perfectly rendered - and every headstone bears a rotary telephone. In the center, a handset hovers impossibly in the air, off the hook, receiver tilted toward the sky.
Frankenstein spent decades fusing classical realism with surrealist displacement. He once said his goal was to “break up accustomed views of the world and to suggest that there is more to reality than meets the eye.

Today, International Holocaust Remembrance Day (and really everyday), I find it both fitting and necessary to share a brief summary of my moms story of survival.
In 1944, at the tender age of six, my mother emerged from the confines of a potato silo in which she spent 22 months with her aunt, uncle, and four cousins; 22 months of starvation, darkness, fear, and illness surviving within the cold, damp, earth; 22 months of longing for her mother, whom she last saw
the day she wrapped my mother in a blanket and handed her to her father through the whole cut in the fence surrounding the ghetto. Upon liberation it was learned that the day after their escape, the ghetto was liquidated and her mother and seven year old sister were part of the transport to Treblinka - the death camp in which they were both gassed. Also, while in hiding, local smugglers found the potato silo and approached the family for money. They found them frail, ill, and starving, with nothing but the clothes on their backs, and my mother’s blanket, yet asked them to conjure up gold as it was thought that “Jews” possessed such powers. Frustrated, they chose her father to beat as he looked the most pious. Soon after her father died in the silo, unable to withstand the beating in his frail condition. The ground was frozen and her uncle had to wait many days to bury him. She was about five at the time and thinking he was just ill and asleep, hugged and slept on his corpse which she had covered in her blanket, while she prayed in Yiddish for him to heal.
So, yeah, as she used to say during her speaking engagements, “when we said #Dayenu!! we meant it!!”

And, upon liberation, she and the few family members with whom she survived, made their way to a distant land where the taste of sweet dates would dance on her tongue and the warmth of the desert sun and the scent of the salty sea would give her HOPE (her mantra); where the friendships formed on the kibbutz would serve to strengthen her. #AmYisraelChai

You honor her memory and her bravery each time you #TakeAStand and visit her blanket on display at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. #IHMEC #NEVERagain by @artlustchicago
