Día de Muertos, a holiday that began in Mexico and is now widely celebrated in the United States, honors the lives, memories, and cultural traditions that connect generations. At the Irvine Fine Center, our galleries are a place to showcase and honor the diverse cultural perspectives that enrich our community. We’re proud to share the work of artists like Rockee Armendariz, whose illustration “Community Fruit” draws inspiration from various Día de Muertos celebrations across Orange, Los Angeles, and Riverside counties. Created in response to the prompt, “what does celebration mean to you?”, Rockee’s work beautifully combines cultures and traditions old and new in one lively scene. Join us at the Irvine Fine Arts Center beginning Saturday, November 14, to experience our two new exhibitions “All Together!” And “Juan Manuel Gomez: En Lo Profundo / In the Deep”. A free opening reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Learn more at artsinirvine.org or click the link in our bio. 🎃 Thinking about making your own Halloween costume? A little planning can help turn your creative vision into something you can actually wear. Here are a few artist-inspired tips to get started! 🎨 Sketch it out. Before cutting or gluing anything, draw your idea and map out the colors, shapes, and details you want to include. 🧵 Build on a base. Start with a solid-colored shirt, dress, or set of clothes, then add layers, embellishments, or painted details to create your look. ✂️ Think beyond fabric. Try cardboard for structured accessories, felt for dimensional shapes, or wire for lightweight forms that hold their shape. 🖌️ Test your materials. Before painting clothing or attaching embellishments, test your supplies on a scrap piece to see how they look and hold up. ✨ Make a practice version. Use paper or inexpensive materials to test tricky pieces before committing to your final design. What are you planning to create this Halloween?
