My dad is a builder that works with stone, concrete and brick and has a knack for fashioning his environment with his art. I work with paint, canvas and recycled materials, but I think that I share his sensibility of surrounding myself with what I create. It’s something that feels primitive to me, like ancient artists that painted their cave walls. At 86 years old, he’s still banging out his work, and I think it’s inspiring.

This is his yard out in the infamous Salton Sea desert in California.

To all my fellow artists out there, flex your self expression! It makes the world a lot more interesting! Never stop creating. 🎨💪❤️ taken in Salton Riviera by @empanadakitchensd

About 34 years ago, around 1992, I went to Mountain Empire High School in the countryside of east San Diego county. I thought I was the only skateboarder at the school until I saw some kid’s homework binder laying on the floor of the school hallway. It had skate stickers all over it. I opened it up and found out that it belonged to this kid named David Stein. I hunted him down, found him in the lunch line, tapped him on the shoulder and asked if he skated. He said “yeah”. I asked him if he was hardcore (weird question), and he said “I guess”. I asked him to bring his skateboard to school to sesh in the parking lot, thinking I might show him a thing or two. We met in the parking lot the next day, and the first trick he did was a fully proper ollie tail grab one-footer. Back hand fully under the tail and front foot fully extended. I was blown away. David is a natural. We met up in San Diego a few days ago, and at 48 years old, he’s still got it! Cheers to you @davidbstein2 🍻!! Until next time brother! ✌️ taken in San Diego, California by @empanadakitchensd

I found another art wall today in Kimball Park. Notice the weathering on this piece…fading paint and missing tiles. Nature and time have contributed to what this art is. taken in Kimball Park by @empanadakitchensd

Every time I come back to San Diego, I get to rediscover my roots and I’m reminded of where my art style comes from, like finding this wall today in National City. It has mosaics, toys, and even coffee cups built into the wall. It’s a “why not?” kind of approach to art while making use of the random materials around you. ❤️🎨 taken in National City, California by @empanadakitchensd
