POSTS STORIES REELS

March 2018.

It’s been seven years as since I put on waders and headed into the water with my hasselblad & some 120mm film in my pocket. Since then, this photograph has taken on its own life. It’s crazy to know the edition is almost completely sold out!

I’m ever grateful for @claireelizabethgallery in her support of me & this body of work, for the deep joy experienced & beauty felt even in the midst of flooding, and for all of you who live with this photograph in your homes— thank you.

*edited to add that I also saw an alligator in the water earlier in the afternoon! 🐊 At the time, I was in the nave of the church, so I pushed some floating pews to block the door until it swam away down the road. And to think! I had only been worried about water snakes and underground holes. by @ashleighcoleman

A couple weeks ago, on assignment for @nbcnews, I met Bettersten Wade, a mother in Jackson, who searched for her son for months, only to discover Dexter had been struck by a JPD cruiser the night he left home and they never told her. She learned where the state buried him and visited the location for the first time.

Belatedly sharing this exciting news— @erinaustenabbott wrote an incredible and beautiful book, Waterfront Living, and included the @theblueshaboo. It thrills me to no end that an island I’ve loved for 30 years gets to be in hardback!

Grateful for another round of Testaments & Revelations with @ashleighcoleman and @patleeo 💥💥💥

We had a great turnout for our reception and an engaged audience for our artist talk on Saturday. We’re so thankful for those who decided to beat the heat and join us in the AC!

It’s always a joy to work and exhibit with these two artists that I’m also lucky enough to call friends. Life has a funny way of connecting our paths and I can’t wait to see where else this show takes us!

This show is up thru August 30th at The City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Charleston so make plans to see it before it comes down! by @ashleighcoleman

We hope you can join us Friday evening from 5-7 PM at City Gallery in Charleston, SC for the reception of Testaments & Revelations: Verse 2. We will also be giving an artist talk at 2 PM on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing everyone! by @ashleighcoleman

Lucky to have had so many great shows at City Gallery - this one is special. Testaments & Revelations: Second Verse features great work by Katelyn Chapman, Ashleigh Burke Coleman, and Pat Owen’s. Come by to see it before it leaves August 30! #citygallery #charlestonart by @ashleighcoleman

Ran down to Charleston on Saturday to get some pics of Testaments & Revelations. It was so nice seeing everything installed! Honored that the amazing @ashleighcoleman and @kschap let me exhibit with them! A big thank you to Katelyn for submitting our exhibition proposal two years ago, curating the gallery space, and running around distributing our promo material!

Testaments & Revelations: Verse 2 is on display at City Gallery in Charleston, SC through August 30. We will be having a reception next Friday, August 14, from 5-7 pm, and our artist talk will be Saturday, August 15, at 2 pm. Hope you can join us! by @ashleighcoleman

“Testaments & Revelations: Second Verse” is on view til August 30th at City Gallery (at Waterfront Park in front of the Pineapple Fountain!) in downtown Charleston. Shout out to Fleming Markel for writing the following on our show ⬇️ I couldn’t have said it better.

“Southerners are experts in past. We collect, honor, and relive the past. It is a testament all the
native-borns have heard, continue to hear, and relay into the future. The stories are often fraught.
They testify to alienation and singularity often with images seemingly benign but mired in
undertones of violence and regret. Home is sacred, but while the home of our forbearers and
childhoods may still be extant, it was possibly only a mythology in the first place. Contemporary
Southerners know deep down that they cannot go home again. Most really do not want to go
back, but ploughing a new field requires faith and strength.”

“‘Testaments and Revelations’ affirms Thomas Wolfe’s conundrum and presents beloved images
of the Southern past but images that also question the path of the future. Ladders that lead up
with no destination. Birds whose soaring is a symbol of freedom and joy, pictured trapped, caught,
or dismembered. Ashleigh Coleman’s sensitive photographs of her “feral” children and their
shared life with the land. Patrick Owens’ forgotten and forlorn but once useful objects assembled
as records of time and place. Katelyn Chapman’s carefully rendered paintings of the substance
of the shrinking rural South – fuzzy, ready-for-pie peaches timelessly confined to a box.”

“The curious imagery of “Testaments and Revelations” testifies to the fondness of memories but
also confronts us with Wolfe’s revelation, ‘You can’t go home again.’ “

I’m stoked to announce one of my next exhibitions, Testaments & Revelations: Second Verse, coming up with good art pals @patleeo and @ashleighcoleman at The City Gallery in Charleston, SC!!

This is the “Second Verse” or second iteration of our 2023 show @southsidegallery in Oxford, MS. You can expect to see some of our greatest hits from that show return, but we’re also adding a lot more new work to fill this beautiful 2-story gallery at Waterfront Park!

Wish us luck as we install the show next week.

Props to @patleeo for designing our posters again!
