Some nights feel like a checkpoint in your life. Like the universe made sure you were in the room. This was one of those nights. 🌹

I had the chance to attend @asterprojectatl event at @mondaynightgarage and support @turquoisemusic, who sang a song that moved me to tears. It became one of my favorite nights of the year.

Aster Project ATL is an Atlanta nonprofit using art to honor loved ones lost to police brutality and systemic injustice. Behind every name is a person, a family, a story and a love that didn’t end when their life did.

I left feeling more awake. And if you’ve been asleep to certain things, there’s room to wake up, learn, and care. Life isn’t always cupcakes. Sometimes we’re so busy trying to put ourselves back together that we lose sight of what’s happening around us. But as we heal, we can make room to show up for others, too.

Because this is bigger than us.

Even if you can’t be in the streets protesting or give financially, you can share a post. You can listen to a family’s story. You can help keep someone’s memory alive.

You can say their name.

This night was really special to me.

I got to spend some time with Maisie @dustandpaper , the beautiful woman behind the @asterprojectatl , and see what she has created. The photo exhibit was absolutely beautiful. Being able to see a space where people can remember their loved ones, honor them, speak for them and keep their stories alive really touched me.

I also got to see Press Zero’s favorite artist, @turquoisemusic , perform her song “Elevation” and it was BEAUTIFUL. ❤️

And then I got to hear @kimberlylatricejones speak. And also see @shopboyfat1 and @shopboymeany such a great performance 🫂

When I tell you that woman changed my entire trajectory that night. Whew. Sometimes you can walk into a room thinking you are there for one reason and walk out realizing you were supposed to be there for something completely different.

I left inspired. I left thinking. And I definitely left with a different perspective on what I want to do next.

Thank you Maisie for creating such a beautiful and meaningful space. I am so grateful I got to experience it. ❤️

It’s a lot of families out here hurting
The @asterprojectatl gave families a time to come together, bond, fellowship, and celebrate our angels.
Sometimes it’s a long journey for justice
But we will get justice
These families will get closure
And we will get our representation to actually care about their constituents by @marie.528hz

@magviolence rolled up with a whole team to make sure this night came together.
They stayed for hours, helped @xtinapaintsatl and @artisticallyeso set up the “Living Room”.
They handled registration, check-in, and provided support throughout the night.

We love our community.

Turquoise Music at @asterprojectatl Art As Our Witness in Atlanta — surrounded by artists, advocates, storytellers and community using their voices for something bigger. 💙

From founder @dustandpaper, our incredible host @iamsharbates, speaker @kimberlylatricejones, @lacooljill, @spam_grier, @djcalvinatl, @wearecommunitychoir, and my own people @marie.528hz + @presszero — this room was FULL of purpose.

I performed. I listened. I learned. I connected.

But most importantly, we showed up for the families whose stories deserve to be heard, remembered and honored.

Turquoise Music joined @asterprojectatl’s Art As Our Witness in Atlanta for an evening centered on families who have lost loved ones to police violence. 💙

Last night was bigger than a performance.

We listened as families told us who their loved ones really were — their names, their stories, their memories and the lives that existed beyond a headline.

There was grief in that room, but there was also LOVE. EMPATHY. COMPASSION. COMMUNITY. AND GIVING.

Founded by artist @dustandpaper, The Aster Project works alongside Georgia families using art, storytelling and public records to honor loved ones lost to police violence and preserve their humanity.

The evening was hosted by @iamsharbates, with @kimberlylatricejones as speaker, and I was honored to contribute my art to something with this much purpose.

You’ll hear “Give It More” by Turquoise Music behind this video because sometimes giving it more means:

More compassion. More attention. More voice. More support.

The event is over. The work is not.
