SWIPE to learn ☕️🔆 - The one thing I had clear when creating my branding was that it had to have a Taino name, it needed to be clean/modern, it needed to have flowers and lastly the one thing I adore when coming home, Dominican Republic, is the palette of beautiful colors you find in nature therefore it needed this as well! ☕️🔆🇩🇴

Hope you enjoy learning of the design process, tell us the comments what you think! 🩵

Hola, for those that are new here, let me re-introduce myself... ⬇️
READ below ..

Hola I’m Ana and Coffee was never just coffee where I grew up. ☕🇩🇴

It was the aroma that filled the house before the sun fully came up.
It was conversation. Hospitality. A pause in the middle of the day.
A greca on the stove while someone visited unexpectedly.
A cup always waiting for you when you arrived.

Long before I understood terms like specialty coffee, origin, or processing, coffee already felt like memory to me.

I grew up in the Dominican Republic surrounded by mountains, nature, and a culture where coffee was simply part of everyday life. It was always present. And even before I knew the language around coffee, I already understood the feeling behind it — the warmth, the ritual, and the connection it created between people.

Around 2018, while living in New York, the idea of Atabey first began taking shape in my mind. The more distance I had from home, the more I found myself reflecting on everything Dominican coffee represented beyond the cup itself: memory, identity, hospitality, culture, and the hard work of the people behind it.

At the same time, I began noticing how little visibility Dominican coffee had within specialty coffee spaces despite everything it carried.

Then after moving to Los Angeles in early 2020, (yes before the pandemic😅) something shifted.

That was the moment I realized it was time to finally grow the seed that had been planted years before.

And eventually, that became Atabey.

What started as an idea slowly became a way to honor where I come from through coffee — intentionally roasted, rooted in origin, and shared through experiences, conversation, and ritual.

Today, Atabey continues to grow one cup at a time through pop-ups, tastings, collaborations, and the people who connect with the story behind what we do.

Every bag carries more than flavor notes.
It carries memory, movement, identity, and home.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey from the beginning and to those just discovering us now. Truly grateful to have you here🌺

We grew up hearing “café fuerte” (Strong Coffee) like it was an actual coffee category😅

But here’s the thing: strong coffee isn’t a type of coffee, and it’s not a brewing method.

The intensity of your cup depends on things like how much coffee you use, how much water you add, the grind, and how you brew it.

Yes, that includes your greca🇩🇴

At AtabeyCoffee, we love our coffee traditions. We just also love knowing what’s actually in our cup. 🌺 by @atabeycoffeeroasters

We’ve all heard someone order a “cafecito fuerte.” ☕ But did you know strong and full-bodied aren’t necessarily the same thing?

Coffee body is all about texture, weight, and how a coffee feels in your mouth.

Once you know the difference, you start tasting coffee a little differently.

Now tell us, ¿cómo te gusta tu café? Light & silky or full-bodied & rich?

Some women know how much they’ve meant to me. Others probably have no idea. The grandmother who gave me my fire. The teacher who saw something in me. The mentor who gave me a chance. The friends who became my safe place.

I’ve been thinking about how often we wait for a special occasion to tell the women in our lives what they mean to us. And honestly? I didn’t want to wait.

If you’re subscribed, you should have received this month’s letter in your inbox yesterday. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, go check your inbox (and your junk or spam folder, just in case!).

Not subscribed? Today’s the day to read it on Substack!

I’m sharing a personal letter to the women who have been part of my story, along with a little more about Dominican coffee, culture, and the things we carry with us wherever life takes us.

If you’ve ever had a woman leave a mark on your life, this one’s for you. 🌺

Maybe that’s why a cafecito can feel like so much more than a morning coffee. Sometimes it tastes like home or like the kitchen you grew up in, the voices you still hear, the little rituals you carried with you without even realizing it.

For us, coffee has always been one of those pieces of home. 🌺🇩🇴
