MULTIPOLAR
on view since 2024 at Futurium Lab, Berlin

A kinetic system of dodecahedral structures unfolding as a molecular body in perpetual reconfiguration.

Motorized joints drive a multi axis system through continuously shifting states. Movement patterns oscillate between mechanical precision and emergent behavior, forming a spatial structure in constant transformation.

MULTIPOLAR draws on speculative form finding derived from AI driven material research: generating, testing, selecting. A process of possibility expansion and reduction translated into motion.

From molecular logic to kinetic form.
Between system and emergence.

🙏 to our amazing team:

Every decision, from cable routing to material finish, was part of a larger conversation about perception, complexity, and resonance. The collaborative energy and trust across the team were key to bringing MULTIPOLAR to life.

Hello world. It’s been a while.

Over the years, research and education have become an integral part of our studio practice. Beyond our own creative and technological work, sharing knowledge and exploring new ideas with young talents has become an inspiring part of our daily life.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the jury for nominating our work AUTOPOIESIS for the STARTS Prize at Ars Electronica. We also want to express our deep gratitude to our internal team, the scientific support provided by Fraunhofer IAO, and, last but not least, the extraordinary curation team from ZKM Renaissance 3.0 for making it possible to realize our installation laboratory at ZKM during their exhibition. Thank you all for your invaluable contributions and trust:

We developed a calibration routine for multiple moving heads within a three-dimensional space. The 3D calibration system, leveraging OpenCV’s homography algorithm, achieves a high precision control. We extend our gratitude to Michael Sollinger for his inspirational approach and expert guidance. Our point cloud system enabled precise targeting of any real-world position by selecting a virtual particle.

In collaboration with a LiDAR-based tracking system, we have enhanced our ability to orchestrate multiple light spots with exceptional precision on a theatre stage. This system was comissioned by artesmobiles as part of their ongoing research and parts have been utilized in their projects “capturing bodies” and “merging entities”, showcased at venues including Zeche Zollverein.

Developed in TouchDesigner using the OpenCV library.

In our proof of concept video, we display 20 moving heads that interact in real-time with a performer, seamlessly enhancing the movements on stage. Multiple light sources, controlled autonomously within a three-dimensional space, expanding the possibilities for artistic expression and performance.

This tracking technology was developed as part of an ongoing research project commissioned by artesmobiles for their projects “capturing bodies” and “merging entities”, which have been presented at various locations, including Zeche Zollverein.

As part of our tracking system for the artistic research project, “merging entities,” we developed a real-time machine learning algorithm that listens to sensory inputs from dancers and learns over time to translate movement gestures into other artistic spaces, such as the realm of sound.

We therefore created a machine learning pipe line from data acquisition, to AI model training and finally real time prediction. All natively integrated via tensorflow in TouchDesigner.

This system was comissioned by artesmobiles as part of an ongoing research and has been utilized in their projects “capturing bodies” and “merging entities”, showcased at venues including Zeche Zollverein.

MULTIPOLAR - Setup

The last two weeks felt like a timelapse. So many ideas, custom parts and preparations made over the last months finally found their new home at the Futurium in Berlin.

1. First test drive with barebone structure
2. Little detail glimpse at final shape
3. Contemplation
4. Assembly line / 9000 parts
5. Custom PCB
6. CAN bus and LED driver testing
7. Backlit Sushi during nightshift

Huge thank you to our engineering team and co-workers making this all happen and bringing this machine to life:

Installation views of AUTOPOIESIS - our most recent audio-visual work currently shown at ZKM Karlsruhe. The exhibition Renaissance 3.0 invited artists
and scientist from all over the world, transforming the ZKM into a hybrid display of artistic expression and experimental laboratories. The growing intersection of these disciplines forms new alliances, creating a “common pool of tools” as late Peter
Weibel described it for his last exhibition at this prestigious institution.

With the neuroscientists at Fraunhofer IAO, we defined a toolset of immersive audio-visual stimuli for the human brain. An ongoing research endeavour on the use of colour, shapes, and sound and their influence on the viewers’ brain activity and performance on a conscious and subconscious level. The human brain and its receptivity to audio-visual stimuli lie at the centre of this collaborative research
project between us and the neuro-scientific department at Fraunhofer IAO. Our eyes and ears are sensory extensions of our brain, translating frequencies and waves of light and sound into neuro-physiological activity.

A few weeks back, we followed the kind invitation to present our AUTOPOIESIS project at ZKM Karlsruhe during the 'KI auf der Couch' event. Collaborating with Ravi Kosuru from Fraunhofer IAO's Applied Neurocognitive Systems team, we shared insights from our arts and science partnership. The discussion centered on how machine learning is crucial to both our creative and analytical processes.

Special 🙏 to Tina Lorenz for hosting us and to Laura Schmidt for her excellent organizational efforts. It was an insightful platform to discuss the convergence of art and technology.

AUTOPOIESIS

With the neuroscientists at Fraunhofer IAO, ATELIER-E defined a toolset of immersive audio-visual stimuli for the human brain, currently on display at ZKM Karlsruhe. An ongoing research endeavour on the use of colour, shapes, and sound and their influence on the viewers’ brain activity and performance on a conscious and subconscious level.

Current neuroscientific findings suggest a multitude of approaches in stimulating brain activity or evoking a focused state of mind. Data gathered in laboratories display increased attention related to hearing binaural beats within a frequency range from 10hz to 40hz, evoking greater interhemispheric connectivity.

High frequency visuals created in @touchdesigner projected via a 120Hz projector. Sample exact synchronised with @ableton produced binaural audio.
